Maiko Satonami wearing the Katsuyama hairstyle by C-jex on Flickr
Katsuyama is my favourite hairstyle, I think. It's the most elaborated, princess-like style coming directly from court hairstyles of tayuu (courtesans). Maiko decorate it with silver crown made of tiny metal flowers, butterflies and grass. In the front they wear a seasonal (the design changes every years) kanzashi usually made of uchiwa (summer fans), flowers and water drops.
Katsuyama is worn only for Gion Festival which lasts almost whole July!

Maiko Kimika and Satonami by WATASAN on Flickr
While Satonami never become a geiko, Kimika decided to stay in Miyagawacho and she is now one of the most popular geiko there!
