Balgreen Tunnel.
Work has started on Balgreen Tunnel's transformation as part of successful local campaign
The tunnel near Murrayfield is set for a complete makover after locals raised money for a redesign.
The Balgreen Tunnel Project was created in an attempt to improve and brighten up the route, which leads to Balgreen Primary School as well as local bus stops and shops.
Work to paint the tunnel began at the south entrance in April.
Plans for the work were in place for last November, but the work was postponed until this month due to a number of unforeseen circumstances.
The Balgreen Foot Tunnel runs under the train and tram tracks that cut across Balgreen Road.
A group of local residents began to raise money for the project in October 2024, collecting over £1,200 which will go towards artist fees, paint, posters, and general upkeep of designs once they are completed.
The group have selected Edinburgh-based artist Dallas Henderson-Smith for the tunnel, who has worked on a number of murals throughout the city.
They state that they have used ideas drawn by local children from Balgreen Primary Schoolfor inspiration on the project, and also welcomed anyone who donated to share their own concepts for the design.
Images reveal a spray-painted rainbow on the edge of the tunnel, with colourful flowers popping up along the sides.
I really like the image of the fox and look forward to visiting the tunnel as the work progresses.
If you want to visit to check it out Lothian Buses, 1,2, 22 and 38 stop nearby, or, as I did, you can get a Tram there. I know not many will go out of their way to just visit the tunnel, but Saughton Park and Gardens are close by and well worth a visit.
