There's a good reason that Saul's longest and most fruitful relationship in the film industry was with Otto Preminger. Although Preminger had a well-honed and well-earned reputation for being temperamental, dictatorial and domineering, he also had the good sense to spot Saul's talent, seek him out and continue to commission title sequences and artwork up until Preminger's final film, THE HUMAN FACTOR (1979). Just as importantly, he had (for several years, at least) the will and power to push Saul and Elaine's work to the finish line - much to the studio executives' chagrin. One beautiful result of Saul and Otto's collaboration is for the 1958 film BONJOUR TRISTESSE. In addition to that movie's great title sequence, the key art that Saul produced is lyrical and lovely. The final 1 Sheet was close enough to Saul's completed design that he allowed his credit on the poster, yet he still decided to personally commission his own print run of the essential, elegantly minimal design, without the studio-added credits and other alterations. We're glad he did: here's the result, direct from the Saul Bass Archive #SAUL100 #saulbass #happybirthdaysaul #bonjourtristesse #ottopreminger #francoisesagan #filmartgallery #saulbassarchive https://www.instagram.com/p/B_5yZ7shslF/?igshid=122revfympxlg
Although not as well-known as his images for VERTIGO, THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM and THE SHINING, his artwork for the SAINT JOAN (1957) campaign is stunning - beautiful, powerful and spot-on in evoking the essence of that film. It's so good and so true to Saul's vision that it's almost hard to believe the studio used it, unaltered. As a result, he allowed his signature to be used on the poster, a stamp of approval that he didn't always give to designs that veered too far from his original concept.
