One of my podcast cohorts, @venivitidrinki gave the leftovers of these bottles for me to play with. I've never had Sauvignon Blanc from Australia before, so this was a fun experiment... it's so intriguing to me how similar both these wines are, despite coming from different wineries. Both are vintage 2020. These are unlike any Sauvignon Blanc I've ever had before. There's a... candied apricot? Candied cantaloupe? There's something here I've never experienced, and don't have the words for, though it is strangely familiar to me. Something that makes me think of childhood, which is stranger still. Whatever that is, that character intermingles with lemongrass, lemon Starburst, eucalyptus, apple, and pear. There's no gooseberry or "black currant bud" here on either of these wines. Clearly these grapes were harvested at full ripeness. It's a strange expression of a familiar grape, to be sure... but a welcome one. Also, for the record, I love that the Strange One has extinct Australian megafauna on the label. I wish more wine labels did that!
