fox - 13.01.25
“just saw a fox in my backyard”
it remains unphotographed, despite my curiosity
“there’s something poetic about it but i’m too tired to think it out”
the imagined lightbulb above my head flickers
and so it goes
paws crunching under soft snow
quietly wandering through the twists of school streets and unfamiliarity
eyes gaze upon you for only a moment, unknown, unproven
through the yard you retreat to the trees, the moon shining through the branches
the whispers of home echo against the familiar shadows on the earth’s cold grass floor
leaves cheering softly under the weight of the animal
a dim house light retracts from peripheral view
and for a brief moment there is the forest floor and a moon to guide you home
met with hard concrete and blinding street lights on the other side
powering through is the only choice
the stone kingdom unknown and unforgiving
but framing the paths are signs of freedom
each crack of earth jutting through pavement
the scent of your mate returning at a closeness
waiting at your burrows side to hear
the journey you’ve made
home is around the corner
it won’t be long
be safe
i’ll see you tomorrow
