Reblogged from Jim Webster, aka Tallis Steelyard:
This tale has to be true, I had it from Maljie in person. She was in discursive mood, having been released from her sickbed and allowed outside to frolic winsomely (or otherwise) over strong coffee and ridiculously large pieces of fruitcake.
Now it appears that at one point, her brother was proud possessor of a talking bird. It was of modest size…

It's been weeks since he's had this kind of facility in his own body, not since he felt the space between him and Catherine first stretched out thin by distance, almost but not quite worn through. Been weeks since he's felt that natural. 'Do you think she's happy?' he asks, hoping his voice doesn't betray the unease in his chest, tight and hard beneath the ribs. 'I don't know that anyone is happy,' Sarit says. But in London Francis has had the funniest sensation of being a non-entity: it's as though everyone's eyes just slide right over him, and everyone else like him; as though even The Stag isn't quite real. As though they're all walking through streets nobody else can see, or maybe doesn't want to. He doesn't know if that can exactly be called hatred: it seems more like purposeful indifferent. But maybe those amount to the same thing.

He wonders if maybe they are living some kind of half-lives, like this: if they're both just burning up, racing toward their expiration dates.
