Thursday, May 13: Savage Master, “Crystal Gazer”
Perhaps everything really does come back around again, since tunes like “Crystal Gazer” not only recalled the early ‘80s in sound and structure, but even the production was straight out of Metal Blade’s first records. So Savage Master was aiming for something very specific, making albums that sounded only slightly more polished than Metallica’s No Life ‘til Leather demo and feeling like they had just performed at a sweaty club in front of 25 people. Of course, bands like Savage Master went nowhere fast back in 1983, and there was nothing to indicate that 2019 would really be more hospitable, but then again, the terms of success had changed considerably over the past 35 years, so perhaps “Crystal Gazer” was simply supposed to just do its thing. And on that level it worked, offering present-day nostalgia with hooks and enthusiasm.
