I’m so not ashamed to be the person who does the animal research. Countless lives have been saved because of my work (vaccines, HIV treatments and prevention, TB treatment and prevention, the list goes on and on).

We treat the monkeys (beagles, cats, rats, any animal we use) with love and respect.

I think it’s a sin how USians are so disconnected from their food systems, but I think it’s a double sin how disconnected from their medicine they are.

you CANNOT be pro-vaccine and anti-animal research!

Stand Up For Science

Edit: I just want to say to those of us who think NASA is unnecessary, NASA does more than fly people to the moon.

It develops new technologies (satellite communication, cochlear implants, enriched baby formula, insulin pumps, firefighting equipment, water filters, and other medical equipment, to name a few); it protects the planet against potentially dangerous celestial events; it conducts critically important climate science research. Defunding NASA is bad for everyone, not just rich nerds that want to colonize mars

This is so scary as someone who one day wants to do part time researcher in the psychology space. Like if science stops, then society stops.

Protect your STEMS and Humanities Majors! They are going to need it, big time!

Support all knowledge and arts in its forms! This counts as the first bill of rights!

With that said, to keep it light-hearted a little bit…

STEM and Humanities fight a good fight. Do not let humanity fall!

SAVE SCIENCE

I am a scientist. The EPA was just directed to freeze all grants. This means that graduate students and researchers funded on EPA funds are now without funds. All ongoing studies are stopped. Scientists at the EPA and USDA are also blocked from communicating with the press or through the internet. It all happened in a moment with a memo, by executive action, with zero input or oversight. It could happen to any Federal institute, including the National Science Foundation, which funds research at universities around the country -- including the health insurance and living stipends of many, many students. Trump also froze all federal hiring yesterday. Please, if you can safely raise your voice, raise it loudly. Call your congresspeople, call the White House, write op-eds and articles and blog posts. This is only Day 4. Please, stand up for science and the environment. This is the emergency we were all worried about. (Share widely-- copy and paste is best to share with people outside our common friends. While I am a scientist, I did not write this. It was copied and pasted from a scientist who wants to remain anonymous. The fear of retaliation is real.) #savescience

GO TO THE LINK TO CALL YOUR LOCAL REP!!!!!! The House will vote on HR 1430, the HONEST ACT, on Weds. March 29th. The latest in the Republican Congress's attacks on the EPA is the misleadingly titled HONEST Act (H.R. 1430), introduced by Congressman Lamar Smith (R-TX). The HONEST Act is intentionally oblique legislation which requires that, when developing rules, the EPA only utilize scientific studies whose data, code, and other materials are all publicly available online. It also requires that all results be independently reproducible. These requirements deviate from the established norms of the scientific community and are designed to cripple scientific research at the EPA. It allows industry lobbyists and EPA-opposed politicians to delay or block credible peer-reviewed studies. For example, the requirement that all scientific results be reproducible is often infeasible (such as when studying one-off events like the Deepwater Horizon disaster or Hurricane Katrina), or prohibitively expensive (such as decades-long public health studies involving thousands of participants). Similarly, the requirement that all data be publicly available can be prohibitive; redacting personally identifiable information from public health studies can require thousands of hours of labor, and other findings may depend on tightly guarded industry or trade secrets. The HONEST Act is yet another example of this Congress putting well funded private interests ahead of the health of citizens and our country.
