When in Jackson... . ✔️Take a selfie with the famous antler arches around the town square. It takes between 10,000-12,000 pounds of antlers to make each arch, (1,000-2,000 of those come from the elk reserve, right outside of town). . 🔸Two of the longest over-land mammal migrations in the world start in this area. In the winter, elk and other animals migrate down to lower elevations. Researchers are studying two main theories about migration patterns: green-wave surfing suggests the migration syncs with the spring green, stopover ecology posits stops at key forage locations. . 🦌Either way, as is often the case when humans live in close proximity to animals, we’re potentially disrupting some of these major migration corridors through development (roads, pathways, and homes). Some animals like bighorn sheep have become completely non-migratory. Others continue their migrations but at a great risk. Locally-based @jhalliance is working with multiple counties and states to preserve these migration patterns. One very effective way they’re doing this is by building highway under and overpasses, which can be upwards of 80% effective at reducing vehicle-wildlife collisions. For those of us who live in our vehicles, a vehicle-animal collision not only potential harms or kills an innocent creature, but it could potentially destroy our dearest homes. . With so many important issues to tackle today, it can be difficult for non-profits to raise funds for something like Safe Wildlife Crossings. But thanks to the amazing attendees of the Teton Valley Vanlife Gathering, we’ll be dropping off a donation this week to help this organization build more safe crossings for animals big and small. Other ways you can help? Drive slowly, donate if you can, and spread the world about the fact bombs we dropped above. . One more fact bomb: did you know that another word for the class of hoofed animals is ungulate?! 🐂🦌🐆🦓 . #thevanproject #themoreyouknow #stayeducated #safewildlifecrossings #jacksonwyoming #whatisanungulate #saveananimal (at Jackson, Wyoming)
