Group is the latest to try, unsuccessfully, to revive animal sacrifice at the site of the ancient Jewish temples
Police said Sunday that they arrested 21 people suspected of trying to bring a sacrificial goat up to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem’s Old City on Friday.
It was the second time in as many months that a group was arrested for attempting to perform a traditional sacrifice at the historical site of Judaism’s two ancient holy temples. While the temples have not existed and Jews have not performed such sacrifices for nearly 2,000 years, small groups ascend the mount perennially to try to revive the ritual, without success.
The Temple Mount, revered by Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary, is Judaism’s holiest site and one of the holiest sites in Islam, and has long been a flashpoint for conflict. Public Jewish prayer (and animal sacrifice) is prohibited there. National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, a frequent visitor to the site, has pushed to change the ban on prayer, prompting fury in the Muslim world and denials from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the status quo has changed.
Surreal situation I experienced yesterday: me and some neighbours came together to report a guy who abuses his dog. Shouting, beating, even slamming the dog against the window (we saw him do it). We called RSPCA, then police, and we all spoke up for the dog. Guy got arrested but might be out soon as his situation is complicated and the authorities know him well. Nonetheless, it was amazing to be in a group of strangers driven by a brave sentiment for the sake of an animal. Then the whole thing shattered for me when they suggested having a bbq together someday. I swear I could feel the deepest sigh coming from my soul. Cannot believe we'd go from such an amazing act of animal love and social justice to eating the flesh of another being. Suddenly there was a goddamn ravine between me and these neighbours....
Well done for taking action on behalf of the dog, you've made a big difference there regardless of what happened afterwards! Unfortunatelty this doesn't surprise me much, the RSPCA themselves approve animal products. They claim to protect animals, then serve their cut up bodies at their fundraising events...
This is a wider roblem with animal welfare advocates and organisations in general, it always involves a really limited group of animals who are deserving of our protection. There is absolutely no logical reason why we should protect a dog but not a pig, or a cat but not a chicken. If we did even a tiny fraction of what is done to cows in RSPCA approved facilities we'd be locked up just like your neighbour.
It is like there is just this hard line between pets and farmed animals, and however arbitrary that line is, people just cannot seem to step over it in their minds. It is the result of widespread social pressure, corporate propoganda and years of indoctrination into speciesism, but it still makes it very hard to understand as soon as you step out of that mindset.
Happy gotcha day to my very own demanding ginger Icarus. Four years today!
You gotta watch out for these charming, clever strays, man. You think you're doing a charitable deed and next thing you know they're running your country and spending your money.
oh my fucking god i thought the preview image on this dog was just a funny looking one but no she really looks like that
