Season 3 episode 8 review

Spoilers for this episode and the matching book parts below! If you don’t want spoilers, don’t read below this line!

Oh my god, I can’t even say enough good things about this episode. Season 3 is literally the best Expanse season so far, and this episode in particular is really great. So many things to talk about! Also, we #savedtheexpanse guys! Soooo happy it’s been renewed with Amazon!

 Amos and Alex: I love their little scene where they are talking about Holden’s mental state. I don’t really know why, just something about this scene gets to me.. the actors just have great onscreen chemistry together, and it makes any scenes with the two of them pretty incredible to me.

 Tilly and Father Cortez! I never expected them to be present in the TV show version, so cool that they added them in! They’ll be crucial later on..

 Melba was okay, though I feel like they rushed her scenes. Also, she has very few speaking lines so far, so we really don’t get to see a ton of her actual acting. Regardless, I’m glad that they stayed true to her storyline so far (with a few minor alterations, and the removal of an unnecessary 4th workcrew character). We will hopefully we see more speaking lines from her in the near future! Also, Anna noticing her and trying to talk to her definitely sets things up for the next few episodes.

 Naomi/Drummer: This was a key difference from the book version, since they are both replacing other characters. I loved the scene when Naomi begs Drummer not to fire on the Roci. Such a heartbreaking moment but so well-done.

 Ashford: I don’t really have a ton to say about him, other than that I feel he is actually not confrontational enough so far. Ashford in the books was a bully right from the start, and we haven’t seen too much of that yet. I do really love David Strathairn as Ashford, though. Such a fantastic and versatile actor, and he plays a great Ashford so far.. I’d just like to see him be a bit more intimidating/confrontational.

 Holden: Poor guy thinks he’s going crazy, thinks he’s infected at first and you can tell he is creeped the fuck out by ghost-Miller. Who wouldn’t be, if we’re honest.. It does take him a while to connect the dots though. I really love Holden’s overall tone, though. It really matches the book version where he is basically ‘haunted’ by Miller showing up any time he is alone, and he starts purposely making sure he is never alone so Miller can never appear..

 And finally, MILLER!!! Yaaaay. They’re definitely bringing the ‘Investigator’ plot forward at least a little bit. We finally got to hear the lines that we all wanted to hear: Door and Corners, It reaches out… 113 times a second it reaches out. Miller basically recites one of the chapters of ‘The Investigator’ in CB almost verbatim in this episode. While this does have me nerding out hearing Thomas Jane say these lines, I think it’s also very important to the plot.. the audience starts getting an idea of what the protomolecule really is and what it is doing (reaching out).  Miller saying that he’s “a tool” and “just an investigator now” also points to this. So happy that we get to see this onscreen, as I feel it’s a crucial bit to the story and points to the overarching plot of the protomolecule in general.
