Unnatural

Dryrot. Unnatural. Demon. Dead. Rotter.

Keiren stared at himself in the mirror with names people frequently hissed at him floating around his head, trying not to cringe. His therapist had told him he needs to spend a few minutes every day looking at his reflection and thinking good things. ‘Positive reinforcement’ she called it. Kind of a hard thing to do when your own family can’t hide the fear in their eyes. It’s almost as if they think he’ll turn rabid without a seconds notice, like a dog or wild animal.

He still spends his nights awake listening to his parents argue over what to do with him and the terribly awful things the neighbours must be thinking. As if they have nothing better to do than worry about the partially diseased boy next door who’s barely away from parental supervision as it is.

The only people who will treat him like a human being are Amy and Simon and that’s because they’re right there with him, getting the snide remarks they’re expected to ignore and open hostility from the small-minded idiots in their small-minded town.

If only he could run away to somewhere more accepting. Where there are more people like him and the towns aren’t littered with hate and prejudice. He has to believe that they exist out there, somewhere. But no. Maxine has enforced the mandatory work placements for PDS sufferers. It’s all bullshit. She knows it. They know it. It’s just some PR trick to pretend like they’re being humane and getting them back into society. Fuck that. It’s just another way to control them.

Wow, Keiren thought to himself. He’s starting to sound a lot like Simon.

That made him smile. The thought of Simon always filled his stomach with a tight, fluttery feeling. No-one could ever replace Rick in his heart, but Simon sure reminds him of old feelings he thought were long dead.

He took a deep breath and tried to look anywhere in the mirror but himself. This is stupid, he thought. It’s just a face. His face. Simon seems to like it so it can’t be all that bad. What was it said to the PDS troupes the other day? “What’s stopping you becoming the people who you are?”. At the time, he thought it was about blaming his non-PDS suffering peers, Maxine and the rest. They’re the ones stopping him from travelling, from exploring different lives for people like him and making his second chance into a life sentence. But the fact he can barely even look at himself makes him think that maybe, just maybe, it’s him.

He’s holding himself back.

This realisation hit him like a train. He’s the one who’s letting everyone treat him like shit. He’s letting them look down their noses at him. He should be the one sticking up for himself. He deserves better. If someone as incredible and inspiring as Simon can care about him, he can start caring about himself.

He finally brings himself to look into his eyes. I don’t deserve it. He thought. The tightness around his eyes loosened as his face relaxed into a small smile.

Kind. Caring. Alive.

I’m a PDS sufferer, Keiren thought. And I’m okay as I am.

p.s. It’s a lot shorter than I wanted it to be but work has been crazy this week so I haven’t had any time to really focus on it. Hope you like it!!
