Fractured Bone | Part 2
Chapter 1
It took for you to gain your consciousness 48hrs, when woke up you couldnt feel much of your leg, you were dizzy, disoriented, and tired. You were confused and emotionally unstable. You scanned the room when you eyes laid on the wooden door with the chart hanging behind it, the door was slightly ajar held by the knob by the one and only Joel goran. ‘Of all people why him’ you thought annoyed. He was serious, you could tell by how hard his jaw was clenched and his side profile nodding as the cop gave him details of the accident.
When you shifted, joel turned his head slight to look at you. Then he excused himself and thank the cop with an arm pat. And got in your room of course he was spared by your–
"What do you want?" You said annoyed You didn't quite know he was the doctor who helped her.
Joel stopped mid-step the moment her voice hit him sharp, defensive, exactly the tone he’d heard in his head for years. He’d been bracing for her to wake up terrified, disoriented, in pain. He hadn’t been prepared for her to look at him like he was a problem, not the person who’d just spent the last forty eight hours worrying himself sick. But he swallowed it hard and stepped into the room.
“What do I want?” he repeated, shutting the door quietly behind him. “I want to check on my patient, for starters.”
His tone was calm, but there was an edge underneath. Not anger hurt wrapped in professionalism. He moved closer to the bed, stopping just out of arm’s reach.
“You’ve been out for a full day. I need to know if you’re in pain, if you’re nauseous, if- ”
“I’m fine,” You snapped.
Joel lifted a brow. “You’re not fine. You fell out of a helicopter. That usually comes with side effects.” You glared. He held your gaze, steady, unflinching.
“You shouldn’t even be here,” You muttered.
You blinked, confused, surprised, annoyed all at once. He saw it. And his voice softened, just barely. “I’m the one who operated on you.” Her eyes widened a fraction. “You ? You did this?”
Joel let out a slow exhale. “Here’s the thing, Y/N…”
He tapped his badge again. “I am your orthopedic surgeon. Whether you like it or not.”
“Yes And you’re welcome.”
You scoffed. “I didn’t ask you to.”
“You were unconscious,” Joel shot back. “Fortunately, I didn’t need your permission to stop you from bleeding out.” The tension between them tightened old wounds mixing with fresh frustration. He stepped even closer, lowering his voice.
“You almost died, Y/N. Your pilot didn’t make it. And if that helicopter had tilted three inches more, I’d be talking to a coroner right now instead of you.” You looked away, jaw trembling grief, fear, confusion flooding all at once. Joel saw it, softened, but didn’t touch you.
“You can be mad at me,” he murmured. “You can hate me if that’s what you want. But don’t pretend I don’t belong in this room.” You didn’t look at him, but her breathing hitched. Joel swallowed, voice gentler now.
“I stayed because I’m your doctor And because I still care. Even if you don’t want me to.”
“Joel...if this is your attitude out of guilt. You could have just let another doctor do it. (Well...he's the only Ortho doctor.) I rather I'll just hang in the tree dead way better”
Joel froze.
Not because he thought you meant it literally but because even in fictional, post-trauma sarcasm, those words hit him square in the chest. His jaw clenched, and when he spoke again, the sharpness was gone. Replaced by something quieter and Firmer.
“Don’t say that,” he said. Not loud. Not scolding. Just real. He stepped closer to the bed, but not close enough to crowd you. “You’re angry? Fine. You hate me? Fine. You want to throw every bit of history we have right back in my face? I can take it.” His eyes locked onto yours steady, hurting, stubborn. “But don’t joke about being better off dead. Not after what you’ve been through. Not after I watched them wheel your pilot into another room and realized it could’ve been you.” He exhaled sharply through his nose, trying to keep himself together.
“ because losing you wasn’t an option.” He scrubbed a hand over his face, frustration bleeding through.
“And don’t twist this into guilt.” you said almost snapping
He shook his head. “This isn’t guilt, Y/N. I didn’t operate out of obligation. I did it because I’m your surgeon, and because ” His voice caught for the briefest second.
“And news flash: there was no other doctor. You wanted me to hand you off to cardiology? Pediatrics? The janitor with the mop bucket?” He let his hand drop, eyes meeting yours again this time with that raw, messy honesty only he ever showed you.
“And I’d do it again.” he continued but you wont meet his eyes
“You fell out of a helicopter, your leg was mangled, you were bleeding out, and I was the only person in this damn hospital who could save it. So I did.”
.
“…Are you in pain?” he asked quietly. “Because I can fix that. Even if I can’t fix everything else yet.” You looked away stubborn silently "I don't energy to argue with you." You said "you're the last bugging person I wanna see" You said Joel let out a breath not angry, not surprised. Just… tired in a way that settled behind his eyes.
Silence stretched for a moment Joel swallowed, voice softer.
“You can be pissed at me all you want. But don’t pretend you’d rather be dead. You’re too damn strong for that. Always have been.” He stepped back just a little, giving you space breathing hard like the argument hit him harder than he let on.
“Yeah,” he murmured, “I figured that.”
He didn’t move away, but he didn’t get closer either. He stayed right where he was close enough to do his job, far enough that you couldn’t accuse him of hovering.
“You don’t have to argue with me,” he said quietly. “I’m not here to pick a fight.”
His hands slipped into his coat pockets, shoulders tense despite how calm his voice sounded. “And trust me,” he added with a dry edge, “I’m very aware I’m the last person you want in this room.”
He glanced at you just a quick look, enough to check your breathing, the way you were holding your leg, the pain lines in your face before looking at the monitor instead, pretending it held the answers his pride wouldn’t let him ask for.
“But I’m still your doctor,” he said simply. “So you’re stuck with me for now.”
He moved to the chart at the foot of your bed, flipping it open.
His tone stayed professional mostly.
“You’re going to need physio. A lot of it. And pain management for the next few days.”
A pause. “Your surgery went well. No nerve damage. No artery tears. You’ll walk again.” He closed the chart, letting silence settle between you for a long moment.
“I’m not here to bug you, Y/N.”
His gaze flicked to yours, finally holding it.
“I’m here because you almost died. Because you needed someone. And because I wasn’t walking away this time.”
But I don't want you Joel! You said arguing with him. Joel’s expression finally cracked just a little. Just… that old wound reopening.
He swallowed “You can hate me. That’s fine.”
“But you’re not facing this alone. Not while I’m around.”
“Well, too bad,” he shot back, voice low and tight. “Because you have me whether you want it or not. I’m the doctor keeping your leg attached to your body. You don’t get to pick and choose right now.” You glared. He glared right back. Sparks, tension, history thick enough to choke on.
“God, you’re impossible,” you muttered.
Joel threw up one hand. “Oh, I’m impossible? I’m not the one who fell out of a helicopter and woke up ready to fight the only guy keeping you alive!”
“YOU ANNOY ME!”
“YOU’VE ANNOYED ME FOR A DECADE!”
Silence.
Then both of you looked away in opposite directions, equally furious and equally flustered.
Outside the room…
Gavin whispered, “Are they married?”
Gavin had his face basically squished against the window, eyes wide.
Alex crossed her arms, watching the argument inside with the resigned amusement of someone who’d seen too many medical soap operas come to life.
Alex didn’t even blink.
“No,” You said dryly. “But give them five minutes and a concussion and they might propose.” Gavin squinted, still watching as you and Joel argued like you invented the concept. “…Are you sure they’re not married?” he asked again.
Gavin gasped. “Like… good history or the kind where someone broke a window?”Alex shrugged. “Judging by that energy?” She nodded at the room where Joel and you were practically vibrating with unresolved emotion.
Alex smirked.
“Oh, they’re worse than married. They have history.”
“Probably both.”
Gavin shrugged "she knows him doesn't she? There's no one could argue that long with Joel. Are you sure she's not his....wife?" Now Joel and Y/n were arguing about anything from oranges to her leg to their past and claims about best friend.
Alex pressed her fingers to the bridge of her nose, watching the disaster through the glass like it was a high-budget drama that somehow landed in their hospital.
“Gavin,” she said, “if Joel were secretly married, we would’ve heard about it every single day. He’s not subtle.”
Gavin kept staring.
“But she knows how to push him. Nobody gets Joel that riled up. Not even me. And I tried once.”
“Still worked,” Gavin mumbled.
Alex gave him a sideways look.
“You labeled his lunch ‘Not For Joel.’ That does not count.”
Inside the room, the volume was rising again.
You fired back instantly, “YOU asked if I wanted juice!”
Joel threw his hands in the air.
“WHY are we talking about oranges right now?!”
“I was being POLITE!”
“You were being BOSSY like always!”
Joel’s jaw dropped. “Oh, I’m sorry for trying to hydrate the patient who fell out of a HELICOPTER ”
“Oh my god, will you STOP mentioning the helicopter?! If you’re a Fricking trauma doctor you wouldnt bring it up?!”
“I will when you stop acting like the helicopter was MY FAULT!”
You sat up a little too fast, winced, then pointed at him.
“You still think you’re right about everything, don’t you?”
You stared at each other heated, stubborn, furious, and just a little too emotional.
Joel pointed right back.
“And you still run your mouth when you’re in pain!”
“…You’re still the worst best friend I’ve ever had,” you muttered.
That silence afterward? Thick. Heavy. Loaded.
“I’m the ONLY best friend you’ve ever had,” Joel shot back.
Then quieter, more honest, “And you know it.”
Outside
“AND STOP TRYING TO GET OUT OF BED YOU CAN’T WALK!”
Gavin gasped dramatically.
“ They’re like… arguing-about-the-dog married.” Alex didn’t look away from the window.
Gavin nodded in satisfaction. “Yep. Soulmates.” Alex and Gavin snapped to attention the moment Joel pushed through the door hair a mess, stress written across his face, and pure defeated exasperation dripping off him. He looked like he just fought a dragon.
Or, well… you. Alex lifted both brows. “You alive?” Gavin grinned like he’d just witnessed the season finale of his favorite show. “So… marital status confirmed?”
“Give her apple juice,” he muttered, rubbing the back of his neck as he caught his breath. “You hates orange unless it’s the actual fruit.” Alex and Gavin exchanged a look.
Joel shot them both a glare.
An exhausted, sweaty glare.
Joel kept going, rambling now, as if trying to force logic back into his life. “And don’t give her those gross hospital crackers, she’ll spit them out. And someone tell the night nurse You likes her pillows doubled " He suddenly realized both of them were staring at him way too knowingly. Gavin grinned. “You know a lot about her for someone who ‘barely wants to be in the room.’”
Alex smirked. “You sure You’s not your wife?” Joel pinched the bridge of his nose. “For the last time, NO.” Gavin whispered to Alex, loud enough for Joel to hear anyway, “He’s in denial.”
Joel froze.
“Shut up.”
Joel groaned and started walking away, muttering under his breath.
“I’m going to check the scans…or jump out a window…whichever gets me away from this conversation.”
They watched him go shoulders tense, hands buried in his pockets, muttering like a man truly at war with his past.
Gavin nodded. “He’s worried. And smitten.”
Alex folded her arms.
“He’s not as angry as he sounds.”
Inside the room, you shifted slightly in your bed, still annoyed, still tender, still stubbornly refusing to admit what your eyes gave away every time Joel’s name came up.
Girly do you watch Greys anatomy? Because I feel like Elijah would absolutely kill as an Orthopedic surgeon.
Wow. What a totally original and never been done before idea!! Elijah Mikaelson… as an orthopedic surgeon? Groundbreaking. Revolutionary...
Suddenly my back is broken, my knees are weak, my spine is shattered. I think I need an emergency consult… preferably alone… in his office… with the door locked....
Everyone is hot. Like, they found all the hottest Canadians and just put them all in this show. And all the characters are good. I love everyone.
There's several canonically gay characters. Unfortunately Michael Shanks' character isn't one of them but still. Yay for the gays.
MS gets a lot of romantic/love scenes. They're pretty mild but he's very, very sexy in them. Watching him kiss someone or being cute in bed with them is 🥵. Honestly anytime there's a love scene I rewind and watch it twice. There's an early scene where he's sitting and his girlfriend is straddling him, his arms are up by his head and his pants are around his ankles. It's very brief, but still, good lord. And he looks great. ARMS. Face. CHEST. That man is *solid*.
It's interesting to compare his character to Daniel Jackson. He's spent all of the first season so far in a coma/as a ghost of sorts. His parents also died when he was young and he was in foster care. Also, watching MS in this role really solidifies all the work he put into Daniel cause they're different too, Charlie is not frenetic and awkward, or super bitchy, he's confident, funny, charming, cocky, abrupt at times. He really was doing *something* with Daniel which made him come across as very neurodivergent among other things, but mans was *acting*.
Overall, I have a love/hate relationship with medical dramas, I'm sort of equally fascinated and squicked by it but I just look away during the surgery parts. The interactions between the characters is pretty soapy but also yummy. Charlie, MS's character has a fiancee and an ex-wife and the dynamic between all of them is pretty interesting. It's popcorn TV but it's addictive. I started watching it for MS of course but ended up just actually liking the show overall. So I recommend!
