Now before anyone grabs a pitchfork, I'm talking about the impression I get from the stories that are publicly out there and the ones that have circulated for years, which, for the record, I take with an industrial-sized bag of salt. I don't know the dude personally.
The publicly known stuff? Buying fans Postmates while they were waiting out in the cold, stopping to help someone who was in distress, and generally seeming like someone who's quick to step in when people need help. Those are objectively kind things to do.
Then you've got all the stories that have floated around over the years about him paying for expensive things or helping people through difficult situations. Are they all true? I have no idea. That's why I don't use them as proof of anything. But if even some of them are accurate, I get that impression.
The funny thing is... I do the exact same thing.
It's probably one of the reasons I ended up in healthcare. I have a bad habit of feeling like I need to take care of everyone else before I take care of myself. And if we're getting armchair psychologist for a second, I wouldn't be shocked if some of that came from growing up without having someone to consistently take care of me after my parents passed. You spend enough time being the one who has to survive on your own, and suddenly you're trying to be that person for everyone else. It's a wonderful quality to have... until it isn't.
Because eventually you stop helping and start martyring yourself.
That's why I always say there's a difference between being compassionate and feeling responsible for saving everyone. You can absolutely be generous and kind without carrying the weight of every other person's problems on your back.
Which is also why, if my read is anywhere close to reality, I don't love the idea of Bad Omens constantly being the ones expected to weather every storm surrounding their collaborators or labelmates. Maybe that's not what's happening behind the scenes, I don't know. But from the outside looking in, that's how it comes across.
At some point you've got to let grown adults own the consequences of their own actions. It's not Noah's responsibility, and it's not Bad Omens' responsibility, to perpetually shield someone else from criticism or rehabilitate their public image every time things go sideways.
The band has worked their asses off to get where they are. Fans are finally getting to see them evolve on their own merits. I'd much rather the conversation be about their music, their performances, and where they're headed next than watching them get dragged back into the same discourse over and over again.
So yeah... maybe I'm projecting a little because I recognize that "I'll fix it" mentality in myself. Maybe I'm completely off base. But if there's one lesson I've learned, it's that you can't keep setting yourself on fire to keep other people warm. Eventually there's nothing left of you.
