Shane was desperate, bellowing as he yanked at the arms of the saviors holding him back from the burning trailers.
“Rick- Rick!” He shouted- “She’s Lori’s! Lori’s baby! I have to- I have to get her- Judy!”

5: Firm Kiss
Finally, Shane had gotten Rick away from the rest of the saviors. He had to believe that the man he’d known before all this was still in there- even if he was angry, even if he had seen the worst the world had to offer.
“Come on, Rick-“ He said, leaning back against the edge of Gregory’s desk. “Isn’t there any part of you that’s still sentimental?” He reaches out a hand, drawing the other man towards him by his jaw, then pressed his chin forward, pressing a kiss to Rick’s lips that was equal parts firm, gentle, searching, and wanting.

A place like the Hilltop would never have suited Shane before. One part historical park and one part sleepy farming community, things moved too slowly here. Kids played between the FEMA trailers where colored drawings were taped to the aluminium siding, at night there was quiet conversation around low-burning campfires.
He would have hated it, he would have missed his car, his guns, and his radio. Missed the game on TV, missed picking up old flames at the bar. But one thing about the Hilltop Colony made it perfect - well, two things.
The kids, and the walls.
The promise of safety for Carl and Judith and the desperate hunger of a long winter that had almost claimed his left arm completely had led to him taking the chance on following Jesus to the colony. Even now, months later, he still didn’t have perfect feeling in the thing, it tingled when he had to grip anything too hard. But he still had the arm, and Carl and Judith were still alive.
He was rubbing his elbow, trying to stop the sharp pain just above the joint when the rumbling of truck engines came drifting over the walls.
“Carl-” He called sharply, and dropped his shovel into the dirt. He watched as the young man’s head popped out from behind the firewood shed. “-go and get your sister, and get up in the trailer.” Shane called, gesturing to where a group of colonists were already moving to get the smallest children inside. Shane let out a breath as he watched the door to their trailer close, Carl and Judith safely inside.
Shane let out a sharp beath and kicked a clod of dirt with the tip of his boot. He stooped down to pick up his shovel with his good arm and began to walk towards the gate, watching as two men moved to open up the front door for the Saviors. It was enough to make a man tired. But at least the kids would be safe, and the walls would still be standing at the end of all this.

After the prison, after everything, Shane just couldn’t do it anymore. Leading the group, it was going to get Carl killed- it did get Lori killed. He left that group of tragic misfits and headed out on the road with Carl and the baby- Judith.
Strange sentiment, naming the baby after a grade school teacher, but how was he going to deny the boy when he had been soaked through to his skin with his mother’s blood?
The memory of last winter drove Shane and Carl south. As long as they kept up their water supply, the heat was bearable, and he didn’t have to worry about Judith freezing in the night.
Eventually they came across the Hilltop, and the Hilltop was alright. Crops, walls, a pissant leader Shane could deal with. And they were paying protection. That didn’t sit well with Shane, but at least the kids had roofs over their heads. After Lori and the prison, that had to be enough.
He was on crop detail when he heard the rumble of trucks coming from outside the walls.
“Carl.” He said sharply, picking his shovel out of the dirt. He watched as the young man stepped away from his work on a length of chicken wire and headed towards the trailer, picking up Judith along the way.
Shane pulled the hat off of his head and dabbed away the sweat from his brow with it.
It was time to meet these Saviors.
