The message exchange with Laila turned Martin's already lousy mood even darker. The shift manifested as dissatisfaction and relentless nitpicking, reaching its peak by the afternoon, prompting Sawyer to step in.

Martin: (irritated) What now? Sawyer: Take some time off. Martin: What… Why? Sawyer: Cause you're not yourself. Martin: (impatiently) Spit it out! Sawyer: (takes a deep breath) Nobody wants to deal with your bullshit attitude. Log off or start looking for a new team. Sawyer: Rest, blow off some steam. I'll manage without you. And we all get that you are going through some stuff, but it doesn't give you the right to make us miserable, too.

Sawyer, known for his easygoing nature, was the most laid-back among Martin's friends. Their collaboration in running the business had been smooth, with Martin's decisive leadership complemented by Sawyer's accommodating nature. The fact that Sawyer felt the need to suggest that Martin takes time off showed a significant problem. It was a wake-up call – Martin's personal problems had come to work with him.

Martin: I know… I'm sorry. Sawyer: I can come over later and bring something flammable. Martin: Yeah, but I don't have glasses. Nor ice. And you have to work tomorrow… Sawyer: And now I'm depressed too… I'll call you later. Martin: Mm-hmm.

With the unexpected free time on his hands, Martin took on the task of unpacking the remaining boxes. Additionally, he visited the store to purchase essential everyday items, such as drinking glasses.

His initial intention had just been a short-term stay away. However, as the days passed, the original plan took an unexpected turn, eventually leading him to retrieve the remainder of his belongings. Now, there was no escape from the reality that, with each unpacked box, a temporary separation was becoming increasingly more permanent. One more thing on the shelf… one more step closer to the end of his shared life with Laila.

Deep in thought with Sawyer, Martin noticed his phone buzzing. "Mind if I take a quick break?" In response, Sawyer raised his mug in agreement, silently signaling, "Coffee break!" While Sawyer enjoyed his coffee, Martin swiped open his phone to find a series of messages from Hanna.

Hanna: Listened to your advice...I have a date tonight! Hanna: I'm so close to faking my death! Hanna: Support me, buddy! Martin: Lesson - never listen to my advice. Hanna: Seriously, Martin! It feels like I'm about to face a firing squad. Martin: LOL! Martin: What's got you so worried? Hanna: What if he's a serial killer? Hanna: Or what if he hates cats? Hanna: Or what if he's secretly in a cult? Martin: Whoa! Martin: But you're in this peer support cult... Martin: Besides, he's probably more afraid of you than you are of him. Hanna: PANIC MODE ACTIVATED!!! Martin: Just be yourself, crack a few jokes, and if he starts chanting, run.

Martin's light-hearted jokes provided a welcome distraction for Hanna. Glancing in the mirror, she muttered, "Good advice, buddy…but running shoes don't match my dress!" Adding the final touches to her appearance, Hanna heard the doorbell ring – her date had arrived.

Laila: Why didn't you call from the airport? I could have picked you up. Hope: Who needs planes when you have a trusty old pickup. I had a little road trip. Of course, it would have been more awesome with my bestie... Laila: Good old days. Hope: Bye, Martin? Laila: Not today. But I'll think about that.

Henry: Delete the account.  Sawyer: What are you talking about? Henry: I'm talking about the dating app.  Martin: What's wrong? Afraid that someone actually wants to meet you? Sawyer: You can thank us later. Henry: You two are idiots...  Martin: Aww, Henry! We love you too.

( / the building is practically empty at this hour. most of the students have returned from holiday but they're all catching up with each other in the dorms or elsewhere on campus. fortunately, cate loves the quiet hallways, especially if it means avoiding all of the holiday cheer going on outside. the door to the art room is wide open with its light on and cate heads towards the welcoming sanctuary to pick up her artwork that was graded over the break. she waves to mrs. w whose sitting at her desk and flipping through an art book. cate's eyes quickly scan the room for her pieces among the ones laid out on the tables. fresh sounds of footsteps come from behind and cate turns her head to see who it is ) oh hey -- long time no see, stranger.
