One headcanon I have for Nikolai is that his mother used to get Genya to tailor him too. Subtly and just for formal events (not enough to be blatantly obvious to anyone who sees him frequently), but enough to make him look more "Ravkan." More like the tsar and less like Magnus Opjer, especially because KoS and RoW make a point to emphasize how closely he resembles his bio father. Some Fjerdan diplomat who knows Magnus would probably make the connection otherwise, or at least that's what his mother worries about.
