Another sacrificed blood of our own to remind us that we have to fight for everything, including our lives, to be given the same opportunities as those who come from "greener sides of the grass." A lot of gang member talk had been thrown around in the midst of his execution, and it reminded me of these recent laws that had been passed... CalGang database is real y'all, and law enforcement uses it to label US and make it "okay" for them to kill us. It's our responsibility to continue to push for transparency and accountability to Gang Databases. Rest In Peace Anthony, we will ALL be fighting for your justice! Swipe left to get put up on game. Effective January 1, 2018. #AB90 #SB458 #AB2298 Thanks to @asmshirleyweber for authoring the bill and cosponsors @youthjusticela @urbanpeaceinstitute @chirla_org @policylink #NILC #workwoke 🙏🏾
since we all need good news time to time
...I forgot to tell the world of tumblr that
SB 458 DIED in Georgia legislative session this past Thursday!!
It DIED!! WE KILLED IT!
It was indeed a great victory. Although now I just feel like we are back where we started (still have Policy 4.1.6 in place), it is a victory nonetheless.
We have been battling SB 458/ HB59 for the past 3 months or so. It was wearing me down. I have cried multiple times through it, went to the capitol too many times, wore my Scarlet U proudly, and got very very angry majority of the time. But after hours of phone banking, visits to the ugly white capitol and dealing with scary tea party members, we have defeated it!
For now, post secondary education is still possible for many youth in Georgia. Even though we still have to pay out of state tuition and still are banned from the top five public university, the important thing is, we can still work towards taking few classes at our local community or state colleges.
Although at times, I felt hopeless and powerless, I know that with the continued pressure on the policy makers, the PEOPLE's power screamed victory. and we stumped on the crazy tea party members and D.A. King.
Thank you everyone who made the effort to call, email and fax the legislators!!
I think I can now change my fb profile picture ^^
It has been a hectic month or two... after a short break we will be back to face the board of regents! ...again!
