The house was filled with Orion's usual cooking smells. It smelled warm and creamy and, if not for the fact that my stomach was squirming uneasily I would be trying to enter the house quicker.
I really am not looking forward to being interrogated to talk about this coffee girl that suddenly entered my life. Well, I guess it might not be a girl? It could be a guy? Actually I don't know what pronouns they use so I suppose it could be a coffee..them?
Wait, it doesn't matter cause I’m not texting them.
Picking my phone out of my messenger bag I settled down the discarded bag by the door. Pulling off my flats I secured the slippers by the arch of the common area on my feet. Daemon and Orion were in the kitchen talking, daemon sitting on the counter and Orion in front of the stove. They were absolutely covered in flour, at least Orion was wearing an apron. Daemon must have heard me come in, he paused mid sentence looking up and waved to me.
“Welcome back calytrix,” He smiled, “We’re having pasta tonight!”
Orion threw a hand over his shoulder waving ‘Hi’.
“Hello? And sounds good.”
They weren’t swarming me with questions?
“How was class today?” Orion called, turning the knob of the stove down and settling with his back against the counter next to the stove. He had a genuine smile on his face, and if not for the mischeshift glint in his eyes I would have thought he had forgotten about the whole coffee girl situation. I approached the counter top cutting off the open concept kitchen from the living room.
“It was good I suppose, nothing truly interesting happened…” I was in the lion's den with Orion, the two of us carefully circling each other. Daemon was a helpless bystander.
“Nothing interesting happened?” Orion replied, raising a brow.
“Nope” I deadpanned, settling down on the bar stools in front of the island, “I'm afraid today was just the same as yesterday and as the day before.”
“Did you even consider it? maybe-” Orion started but honestly at this point i was getting annoyed.
“No, and I won't be. I don't know them orion and it's really strange to just text a random person who slapped their number on my coffee cup.” Orion bit his lip looking away, guilt clear in his eyes. Good, he shouldn’t have pushed about this.
Daemon looked back and forth between the two of us.
“Wait what? You got someone's number?” Daemon turned to me confused. Oh great at least he didn't tell daemon yet, Granting me a small scrap of privacy. Which I had just thrown away.
“Yes, Some.. person wrote their number on my coffee cup from BB’s.” I hesitantly pulled out the crumbled coffee sleeve from my pocket, placing it down on the island. Stars, why did I even keep it?
Daemon leaned forward looking at the brown cardboard with disbelief and wonder.
“I didn't ask for it, someone just wrote it on the cardboard. I was in a rush to get to H and E class and Orion spotted it first.”
“This is true,” Orion interrupted unhelpfully. “She had no idea about the number till i pointed it out”
“Yes, and I would have thrown it out but Orion here threatened that he would tell you.” I continued, throwing Orion under the bus as his brother looked over at him crossly.
“Orion?” daemon asked, crossing his arms over his chest looking at orion disapprovingly. Orion looked back and forth between the two of us.
“Wha- Hey I still didn't tell you about the number. Calytrix did that, It was just an empty threat.” He retorted, leaning back to pout.
Daemon rolled his eyes, turning back to me. “Sorry about him, he really wasn't trying to threaten you” He apologies smiling.
“It's fine,” I replied feeling silly for thinking they were going to bombard me with questions.
“So are you going to text them?” Daemon hesitantly asked, pulling the cardboard towards him, looking at the number idly. He seemed like he truly felt indifferent about the answer, looking over the number before glancing back at me. I don't know why but I decided to answer truthfully.
“I'm not sure.” I looked back down at the number letting the numbers process in my head. “I truly do not know them and therefore I can't dictate if I would even feel attraction towards them.”
Daemon glanced up a quirky smile hanging on his lips, chuckling lightly, he glanced down again at the number, Orion settled on his elbows next to daemon.
“So you're scared that it's not going to work out?” Daemon asked, smiling for some reason, these two don't make any sense.
“I suppose yes, that and I'm not really looking for anyone at the moment. I have studies I need to attend to.” I answered squinting as Orion started laughing.
“Calytrix, all you do is study,” Daemon retaliates, starting to laugh himself.
“Why are you laughing?” Apparently I had missed the punch line because they laughed more after that.
Orion finally settled down little puffs of chuckles coming out as he talked.
“We’re not laughing at you Cal, it's just-” talking around the giggles he settled down, “That's such a you answer!”
“What? No it's not.” I replied ignoring the voice in my head saying it was basically true. “And I will text them actually!”
Daemon suddenly stopped laughing looking at me with a more concerned look. “You don't have to calytrix seriously. Me and Orion are only teasing you, if you don’t want to text them that's completely fine.” He explained.
Now I have no idea why but I felt.. Kinda disappointed. Something in me was honestly curious about this person who apparently liked me enough to give me their number on my coffee. Frowning, I looked back down at the number letting my gaze focus on the scribbled heart.
“No um actually i think i would like to text them.” I admitted looking back over the messy handwriting in thick sharpie. Glancing up, daemon and Orion were looking at me with a surprised smile.
Daemon chuckled, pushing the number back towards me. “Well then go get ‘em tiger”
Swallowing the nerves that started to build up in my stomach I grabbed my phone punching in numbers.
