Star City season 1 episodes 1 and 2

I’m so hot and sleep-deprived at this point that this is basically incoherent but here are some thoughts and some of the references in the first two episodes of Star City.

Major spoilers below the cut

Episode 1

Lyudmilla Raskova is utterly terrifying and yet very compelling, I can see a direct line for the same qualities in FAM Irina. The nickname ‘the night witch’ does seem fitting, although the night witches were an all-female night bomber air squadron and she was a tank commander. (Apparently Anna Maxwell Martin knows historian Ben McIntyre and asked him about all the WWII stuff (called the Great Patriotic War in the USSR). Who knew?)

Ooh, Irina did 4 years at Lomonosov (Moscow State University — oldest and largest higher education institution in Russia, I think)

Hats off to the composer of the soundtrack, it’s incredibly menacing — Federico Jusid, apparently.

It’s baby Sergei! Hurrah! And he’s as genius-crazy as an engineer as we know he is 🤩

Omg I love cheering ground control scenes and I miss them in FAM so much. (Quiet awe isn’t the same.)

I mean, I saw it coming the first time and knew it was coming this time and I’m still as shocked as Irina. (Semi-parallel with the suddenness of you know what happening to you know who in FAM 4x09 is 😢)

I *love* Anastasia Belikova and I would probably die for her. Her moon landing scene is so good. And Valya weeping when she lists the names of those who have gone before 🥹 The names were;

Filosova (Maybe this is Anna Filosova? Feminist writer..?)

Tereshkova (presumably cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova?)

Yana Akhmatova (the one Lyudmilla shot 😢)

@isbtwneotsfbous kindly identified the end song as based on a famous poem ‘I like that you are not in love with me...’ by Marina Tsvetaeva.

ETA this Reddit post has it as “I Like That You Are Not Sick With Me (From the film "The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath!")”.

Season 1 episode 2

“Don’t be ridiculous — the state would never pay for our funerals.” Ahahahahaha, he’s funny. And the person I’d want on the other end of the comms tbh in that scary situation, ngl. Very reassuring.

Sergei with the maths… pretty good for on the fly calculation of distance.

Apparently, irl cosmonauts were issued with a machete and handgun as standard for missions to cover exactly this scenario while they awaited recovery after landing until around 2006. 🐻

Irina reading the files and revealing it immediately 🤣

Poor Anastasia — now she’s treated like a doll the state can play with 😭

Another hotel elevator — and it doesn’t have a bug in…? How interesting…

Baby Sergei being so useless at subterfuge is utterly hilarious and very true to what we know of him from FAM. I think the forbidden writer is Nikolai Fyodorov. Does anyone know the music he was listening to? (Also, he seems so lonely 😢)

This bit is interesting — Korolev (inspiration for the Chief Designer) was known to have read it.

Also interesting on the immortality front, and the fact Sergei’s name has appeared in a possible computer programme or something that has outlived him personally in FAM… Season 6 call-back potential…?

Poor Anastasia — arranged marriage publicity stunt and not going back up to the one place she felt she could breath…

Yikes.

I cannot wait for the next episodes.

SCHITT’S CREEK | 1.01 - “Our Cup Runneth Over”

Our Cup Runneth Over: SC Rewatch

Alright, it’s been a couple weeks and I’m still kind of devastated it’s over. So the only thing to do is dive into the rewatch.

The pilot is a little weird to watch, now that I know where they all end up and have seen how they grow. They’re all like different people! Moira and Alexis especially - I feel like there are bits of them missing in this episode. Moira’s voice is much closer to Catherine O’Hara’s than it is throughout the rest of the series. I don’t think the accent and the affectations and the vocabulary were quite set. The screaming was absolute perfection, but some of the conversations - like with Stevie about the “stolen” earrings or Alexis in the cafe - felt more grounded than I’m used to Moira being. And Alexis isn’t nearly as fluttery. Her signature shoulder shimmies and kind of awkward dance-y movement are missing.

Stevie and David, though - right off the bat, their first interaction kills me. He’s so frostily polite, even while insulting the motel, and you can tell Stevie likes him immediately. Well, maybe not likes - but she’s ready for the entertainment she knows he’s going to provide.

I gotta say, the timeline of Schitt’s Creek is a never ending nightmare, but I appreciate that it’s fucked from the very beginning. Alexis has known Stavros for three months (excuse me - it’ll be four months next month) and yet it was “last summer” that he left his molly in her glove compartment. The other stuff - Johnny turning 60 recently enough for Starvos to try and do lines with him at the birthday party, her visiting Stavros in rehab, etc - I guess could have happened in that three months, but I don’t see how “last summer” works.

Episode Highlights

That house is ridiculous and I love everything about it

Arguing over whether Johnny needed to actually buy the deed to Schitt’s Creek in order to make the joke (personally, I think yes) which is so not the thing to focus on when your whole world is collapsing

That portrait - oh god, it’s grotesque and so delightful

Look, I’m not above a crude pun. I think the name Roland Schitt is hilarious

The whole “you get murdered first” scene

David and Alexis’ faces when Johnny yells at Roland to “get the fuck out”

The cafe menus

Moira screaming at the lightbulb while looking for her earrings

David’s whole face journey after Stavros breaks up with Alexis

The sad Waltons-esque good-night

Episode Low Points

Look, I’ve got to be honest, I almost didn’t watch past the pilot because of Roland. His name is literally the only thing I enjoy about the character.

Outfit Ravings

Alexis’ pink dress is iconic. But I don’t love the moving day blazer. It’s a little business-y for me. 

Look, I love all of David’s wardrobe. I love when his outfits fall more on the funky side of things, as Stevie would say. Love the playful, artistic side of him, love his cuddly sweaters. But put that boy in a white t-shirt and a leather jacket and there is nothing finer. Sorry, I don’t make the rules. His lounge wear does look very comfortable, though the beanie makes him look like an elf.

I like the spider webbing on Moira’s dress. It’s not too OTT for this first go round, but sets up our expectations. And the broach on her jammies. Just, ugh...**chef’s kiss**

Final Thoughts

A pretty excellent pilot.
