Now for something that isn’t pony related! Just wanted to show you guys a character design exercise we’re doing in my Character Design class. The whole class had to design the exact same character based on nothing more than a description, and you’d be amazed by just how different people envision the same character! This is my version Joey (the character’s name), a street-rat who works a delivery day-job but has high aspirations to be a film writer.
The process we went with for this is:
1. Silhouette: finding the basic shapes and outline that best fits the character. The ones that the class liked best were 5, 6, 7, and 11, and after they were chosen we moved onto...
2. Rough concepts: staying very rough and playing with the shapes and design of the character. This isn’t meant to be the final version of the character, and you experiment with the features of the character and what clothing they’d possibly wear. Joey in particular lives in the 1940s so that has a huge impact on what he’d wear (references are your friends!). For me, the class really liked 3 with the clothes 5 has on, and from here I went onto...
3. Rough posing: solidifying the character through the use of acting poses. Based on who the character is, how do they move and hold themselves? That’s what this part is for! I actually drew a few but the only one I’m showing here is the action pose: given that Joey needs to move around New York fast I figured he’d know how to parkour, hence the reference and my drawing based on it.
4. Character Expressions: Further tying down what makes this character’s design as well as they’re personality. Joey’s loud, sarcastic, and expressive who doesn’t take nonsense from anyone. He’s also very smart (this is actually why his head is so big in his design). Tried to show some of that here! c:
5. Turnaround sheet and final color sheet: mostly solidified design with a turnaround sheet that still remains true to his character. He’s nearing completion here but still may need some stuff hammered out before he’s considered “complete”, but this as far as we’ve gotten thus far with this particular assignment. Despite the turnaround needing some work, I’m pretty proud of it! C:
But ye! Just wanted to share with ya’ll a character design I’ve done from scrap to finish. c: I’ll get back to more pony stuff soon, but that does leave the question: would you guys be interested in hearing me talk about what I’ve learned thus far in school, like animation techniques or character design stuff?? Let me know! ^.^
