3D me, from the Coney Island Scan-A-Rama
Today my mail included not only a credit card offer for someone who no longer lives here, two catalogs, and The New Yorker, it also contained a small box marked "FRAGILE!" — my Scan-A-Rama 3D print!
There are a few rough spots here and there (perhaps I'll try to gently sand them down a bit), mostly due to my messy hair, but the detail is pretty amazing. I've done 3D prints myself (though it's been a while) and I can see this kind of organic shape must be tough to clean up and print.
I love the little Scan-A-Rama booth at Coney Island. It fits so perfectly with Coney Island's history of popularizing esoteric inventions like the infant incubator. A little showmanship, a little science, and you've got a new attraction. The Scan-A-Rama is the brainchild of The Great Fredini, who has also printed out a scale model of Luna Park.
I chose a bust rather than a full body scan since the level of detail is higher so it's more portrait-like, and also because I liked the allusion to classical marble busts. I have to admit it's pretty strange to have a little copy of my head on the bookshelf.
Pardon the crappy phone photo — I'll try to take a nicer photo with my better camera during daylight hours.
