What is your advice for a situation when you are writing a longer work and are unsatisfied with the voice or the tone overall? I can edit for narrative balance or flow, and I can re-write for plot, but I've never figured out what to do when I'm writing the story that I intended to write, but it doesn't /sound/ the way I want it to sound, if that makes sense.
Hey! Sorry this took me a bit to answer, I've been thinking about it! I think for tone sometimes what helps me is reading it out loud--I can catch a lot of things that just sound wrong that way. Or if you don't like to read out loud, there are apps like Voice Dream Reader that will read your work out to you (also built in to Microsoft Word and others, but I've found the voices on Dream Reader to be the best.)
Oftentimes what I'll do too is literally retype the story. I'll have the old draft open on one side and pull up a fresh document and then retype it in a new document and at that point I start to change things on the sentence level because I've found a way for them to sound better.
I hope this helps?
