I need to watch this! I read Middlemarch in college.

Yes! You should watch it! I had not read Middlemarch in college, though I really wish I had. I read it on my own a couple years ago on the recommendation of two cousins (one of whom is an English professor, and neither of whom is my “main” cousin who I’m super close to), and I think I would have gotten more out of it in the context of a class. But anyway, the webseries is very cute and actually pretty original as far as these vlog webseries go.

This is such a good commentary! Though this might be a bit nitpicky, I sort of have to wonder if Max really changed in any meaningful way, rather than recognized changes around him... I don't know, anyways this review is great. :)

I don’t know--I sort of agree with you, but...

Spoilers below!

Max is clearly the most emotionally mature and together of the whole group of friends, even from the start... But I don’t think that means that he didn’t develop or change during the months of filming. Remember, he secretly applied for the internship that Fred had assumed was his own. Obviously that was partly because Fred wasn’t mature enough for him to discuss it, but still. At the end, Max is going to make college his full-time thing when he transfers to Lowick from the community college, and finally stop working in his dad’s restaurant and become more independent. This isn’t exactly about emotional maturity, since presumably there were financial reasons for his having taken that earlier path, but at the same time, it also sort of is: at one point he had decided to give up his studies (perhaps so as not to be taking anything away from [or causing more friction with] Fred if he accepted the internship?) and work at a different restaurant in another city. He was planning to follow a path that was probably not the right one for himself, because he was putting Fred first. In some ways, Fred’s growth is also tied up in Max’s, and Max was basically waiting for Fred to catch up so that he himself could make certain choices, but I don’t think I would say that Max didn’t change in any meaningful way.
