Day 8: Scared of thunder

I've got another Project Hail Mary fic that I've been working on. This one is a standalone that I wrote specifically for this event. I'll probably post it on AO3 at some point.

Summary: The Eridian scientists manage to alter the weather in the dome to include a thunderstorm. For Grace, it brings up memories of the incident at Adrian. (Fic under the cut.)

Grace didn’t know how the Eridians did it. Yes, they had succeeded in creating fog and rolling tides and sunny days and starry nights – those last two weren’t all that hard, of course, but it still amazed Grace that they could do it at all. But today, they’d outdone themselves.

It was raining.

Starting light, sprinkling and intensifying to heavy, torrential. A downpour. It hammered on the roof of his house as Grace sat on the couch, trying to ignore the lurking memories of Adrian.

Where…is that noise…coming from?

Noise is from all around! It’s loudest at portside of bedroom.

He breathed in, deep and steadying. The smell of petrichor through the open window filled his nose. The simulated sky was dark, clouded over. Grace wasn’t sure if it was just a projection or if the Eridians somehow found a way to produce the thick cumulonimbus clouds that now loomed overhead. Either way, it was convincing.

A knock at the door startled him from his thoughts.

“It’s open.” Grace called out.

The door opened and shut, and he looked over to see Rocky standing there, rain sparkling like crystals on his xenonite suit. Rocky shook himself like a dog, water droplets scattering everywhere.

Grace groaned. “Really? Do you have to do that inside? Come on, man.”

“If shake outside, will still be wet.” Rocky sang, as if that was the most logical thing in the world.

“Yeah, but now the house is wet.”

Rocky tapped his foot on the floor. “House seems fine.”

Grace rolled his eyes and sighed. “I can just get you a towel. That way, you won’t—”

Thunder rumbled.

Grace flinched. Stared wide-eyed out the window.

“Grace, question? Heart is too fast. Why distressed, question?”

Trying to catch his breath, Grace shut his eyes for a moment. Inhale, exhale. He bit his lip and opened his eyes.

“Uh, I-I’m okay.” Before Rocky could call him out on his blatant lie, Grace said, “The Eridians made a thunderstorm. Th-That’s…new.”

Rocky stood straighter. “Yes, yes, yes.” He bounced with every musical note. “We find on Earth thinking machine. You like, question?”

Another roll of thunder stole his answer. This one was louder, longer. Threatening. Every part of him tensed. Grace whimpered.

Rocky squeaked. “You are hurt, question?” He climbed up onto the couch, one foot tapping against the cushions.

Grace couldn’t get the reassuring words to form past the lump in his throat, the hammering of his heart. Another crash of thunder. A flash of green. Violent thumping, rumbling.

Gravity is tearing the ship apart!

Lightning snaked across the sky. Sparks flying. His seat throwing him forward. Grace felt the scream rip from his throat. Raw and burning. His arms flew up to cover his head. The ship spinning and spinning, plummeting. He curled into a ball. His head pounding. LCD screens flashing their warnings through a straight streak of blood.

Adrian, their emerald beacon of hope, stealing away their fuel.

Rocky’s voice shrieking his name. A terrified chorus, a desperate litany. His claw touched Grace’s arm, smooth xenonite on tense skin. Not quite the same place. Grace yelped. Expected his flesh to sizzle. Static crept in at the edges of his vision.

“Grace, breathe breathe breathe.”

His breaths were too shallow. Panting. Chest tight as he trembled.

“Stop thunderstorm! Grace is distressed. No more storm. Bad bad bad.”

Through the flashes of the Hail Mary’s damaged control room, Grace could hear the thunder stop mid-rumble, the rain slow to a soft patter then vanish into the fog that rolled through in its place. The sun didn’t exactly shine through, but it was lighter outside.

And silent.

With the thunder gone, Grace sucked in a breath through gritted teeth with greedy lungs. It shuddered and hitched, but one breath led to another. To another. Chasing away the memories of crushing gravity and rhythmic pounding and Rocky’s screams. He was still shaking, still curled up. But he lowered his arms and wrapped them around himself.

Rocky took a tentative step forward. “You are back, question?”

Grace nodded. He squeezed his eyes shut against the tears forming. One slipped free.

“You are leaking. You need hug, question?”

Again, he nodded.

He felt Rocky climb into his lap, pushing his knees so he wasn’t so curled up, and slipped under Grace’s arms. Instead of hugging himself, he was now hugging Rocky. The sobs tore free from his control, wracking through him. Grace pressed his forehead to the warm xenonite suit, trying to focus on the weight holding him together, anchoring him here, as he shook. He wasn’t on the Hail Mary anymore, no longer adrift in space. The gravity, while a little heavier than what he was used to, wasn’t trapping him against the console, wasn’t dragging him back to the planet Adrian. He was in his house in his dome on Erid. Home. Safe.

As his sobs died down, Grace realized Rocky was singing. It was a song he always hummed when Grace was distressed. A gentle melody, soft and steady. Grace fought to match his panting breaths to the rhythm, slowing down to keep pace through the sharp pains of overworked lungs.

Rocky paused his singing, and Grace mourned the loss of the calming metronome. “You are okay now, question?”

“Y-Yeah. Sorry.”

Rocky cocked his carapace. “Why sorry, question?”

“I didn’t mean to f-freak out. You and the scientists did a nice thing for me, and I… I ruined it.” He looked away and tried not to think of his mad dash across the compound, of Stratt’s disappointment, of Carl’s final words to him. “Just like I ruin everything.”

“You no ruin. Thunderstorm bad bad bad. Distresses you. I make sure they no make thunderstorm again. Only fog. Fog is calm and good.”

Grace chewed his lip. “Can you, um, can you keep the rain? I don’t mind the rain. Just…maybe not so hard?”

“Yes yes yes.” Rocky let out a trill. “We keep rain. I talk with scientists about altering. No loud weather.” There was a short pause before Rocky, sounding more subdued, asked, “You want to talk about fear of storm, question?”

Grace hunched his shoulders. “I-It’s the noise. It…reminds me. Of Adrian. The planet. The fuel…” He shook his head.

Rocky held him tighter, a tremor coursing through his carapace. “Bad bad bad memory.”

“Yeah.”

“Just a memory. We are on Erid. We are safe.”

They remained curled around each other as Rocky resumed his serene song. Grace shifted down until his head rested on a throw pillow, his back to the window. He shivered against the memories. Rocky kept him warm.

The first morning of a weeklong vacation in Aix-en-Provence, France is peaceful. Price watches Gaz, Ghost, and Soap play with Jamie. “See? This was a good idea,” Nikolai says. “It’s only day one. Two, if you count the travel day yesterday.” “We all need a vacation. Plus Jamie is able to play with her ‘uncles’ for more than ten minutes.” Soap walks down the path, carrying the small toddler who looks around with her curious eyes.  He  walks a quarter mile to an area by the lake. He smiles, seeing the glow of the beetle he’s after.  He gets the toddler’s attention, showing her the beetles. Soap has difficulty catching a firefly, but when he catches one, Jamie stares at it with awe. She tries to grab it, resulting in a lesson about being careful not to squash it.

“What’s wrong?” Nikolai asks as he sees Price running down the hall. “I can’t find Jamie!” “I’m sure she’s safe.” This doesn't ease Price’s worry. He feels like Nik isn't worried enough. He puts on his boots and runs out of the cabin. Nik follows him.

“I looked everywhere for you! Do you have any idea how worried I was?! What’s wrong with you? How hard is it to tell Nik or me that you’re taking her out?!” “How else could she—” “Toddlers find a way!” “Alright, calm down,” Nikolai says. “She’s safe. Come on, Ghost says, a thunderstorm is coming.”

It starts raining as everyone enters the house. Thunder can be heard in the distance. Nikolai and Price head upstairs to put Jamie to bed while the others set up for a poker game. “... I was watching her!” Nik and Price hear Soap argues. “You’re supposed to tell the parents when you take their kid out!” Ghost argues. “Especially when said child is two years old!" “He gets it. She’s safe. Let’s just play,” Gaz argues. Rain hits the window as the six gather around the table.

It’s not long until thunder is heard above the cabin and lightning flashes. Gaz, Ghost, Nikolai, Price, and Soap question the possibility of a blackout. Gaz and Soap think they hear crying. Neither day a thing, but get their answer as Price pulls out his phone from his pocket. Gaz, Ghost, and Soap realize Price has a baby monitor in Jamie’s room. Rather than question why, the three worry about Jamie crying. “She’s still scared of thunder,” Nikolai comments. “It’s normal for toddlers,” Price says as he stands from his seat. Gaz, Ghost, and Soap watch the worried fathers go upstairs.

They wait five minutes before both men return. Price is holding a still-upset toddler who clutches her favorite German Shepherd stuffed animal. “She’s not going back to sleep,” Price sighs. Nik and Price sit back at the table to resume playing. Nik and Price wonder if this means Jamie will be cranky tomorrow the longer she takes to go back to sleep.

So, I have decided to give myself a dopamine rush and talk about my headcanons for Thominho, Thomas being scared of thunder.

Ever since thunder almost turned Thomas deaf, Thomas has an internal PANIC when he sees lightning and thunder.

The lightning is mostly because he thinks of Minho— how he was so scared of him dying. How something could *hurt* his love.

(^ important to note, I also believe in both adorable and comedic ideals that Thomas gets mad at anything that hurts Minho, even if it's an inanimate object. "HOW DARE YOU HURT MY BOYFRIEND, YOU HAVE COMMITTED THE GRAVEST OF SINS" then he just kicks the chair Minho tripped and landed on his face because of)

Anyway, Thomas REFUSES to let Minho walk outside while thunder is going on. He would most likely blame himself

^ Minho wouldn't push this, because he knows how much Thomas cares about it, even if it's dramatic overreaction

Thomas SEETHES whenever Minho teases him about thunder, and Minho soon learned to NOT MESS WITH TOMMY WHEN HE'S BEING OVERPROTECTIVE, that's how you get a couch to sleep on

*But Thomas never lets Minho sleep without him with thunder going on. He wants Minho constantly beside him.*

And Minho like. Kind of finds this annoying but he is also worried about thunder soooo

I'm terrified of storms, driving in the rain, driving in the dark, and just being in the car when it's dark and raining. I had to drive in all of that and I couldn't see and I started crying. I made it home but I'm still freaked out. I just want to be held.

A Dark and Stormy Night

Ayyy another request from an Anon <3  “I have a fic request! How about Gabriel x Reader and the reader is scared of storms and Gabriel comforts the reader “ Okay so I hope somebody here has watched Open Water 2 and gets the song reference lol Hope you enjoy! And feel free to request more stuff guys! I do ships too. ~~~~~~~~~                   You curled your hands around your mug and waited for it to cool enough to drink. It had been a long case and Sam and Dean wanted to wait until morning to hit the road. You had decided to get your own room this time instead of sharing, which was unfortunate because this was a dark and stormy night. A night where you might wanna have two strong guys in the same room with you.

The rain was pouring outside and the first hints of thunder rolled in the distance.

You pulled your feet in closer and tucked the blankets up around you. There was nothing good on the crappy motel TV so you settled on a cheesy sitcom rerun and just tried to ignore the growing rumble outside. A sudden flash of close lightning and a crack of thunder startled you and you gave a small scream, spilling a few drops of your drink. You set it on the bedside table and pulled the covers up quickly around you. You would've considered going a room over to stay with Sam and Dean but you didn't want to get any nearer to the storm.

Another crack and you were visibly shaking.

Suddenly you could hear the slight rustle of wings.

"Heyyo, how's my favorite..." he trailed off, "Sugar, you alright?"

You gave a grateful smile as he walked towards you.

"Gabe! Hell... I'm so happy to see you."

He smiled, "Now that's the kind of greeting I wanna hear."

Another flash of bright lightning outside and a huge crash shook the building as you curled into yourself with a squeak. Your cheeks got red as you realized how silly you looked.

"Really?" He sat down on the bed next to you,"A big, strong, scary hunter like you, afraid of a little thunder?"

A sudden crack of thunder seemed to rumble in displeasure at being called little as Gabriel pulled you into his lap. He picked your now-cold drink back up and warmed it to a comfortable temperature, handing it back to you. You gave a small thank you and took a sip while curling into him.

He looked thoughtful for a moment and then smiled.

"Frère Jacques, Frère Jacques,

Dormez-vous? Dormez-vous?~"

The thunder seemed to calm as you rolled your eyes and gave a small smile. You decided to humor him and sang along quietly.

"Sonnez les matines, sonnez les matines,

Ding ding dong, ding ding dong.~"
