218. A key ring from the National Bowling Hall of Fame [20 pts]

okay, so i misspoke when i said the night of List Release that City Museum was the only thing worth going to on Road Trip in St Louis.  it would have been really awesome had the judges sent us to the National Bowling Hall of Fame.  i wouldn't call myself an avid fan (or even a casual one...) of pro bowling, but i've loved to bowl since i was kid, and it's the one sport i don't suck at.  it was one of those places i kept swearing i'd go to during my three-year stint living in the Lou, but never quite made it out to.

so, points for the judges not repeating another road trip destination from 1989.  however, i'm a bit sad that this wasn't on this year's list, since that would have been a wonderful excuse to finally see the Bowling Hall of Fame.

history lesson: Kimbark Liquors

reading old Scav Hunt lists can teach a newbie a thing or two about Hyde Park history...and, by a newbie, i mean anyone under the age of forty.  today's bit of history, not unlike previous Hyde Park history lessons, has to do with local purveyors of booze.

the sun rises in the east, it sets in the west, and Kimbark Liquors is always there to sell you some cold ones, right?  i started at the U of C in 2000, and  it was open and ready to mitigate the sobriety of the U of C student the whole time i was there.  in fact, a peep at the Kimbark Liquors website claims that the store has been open since 1963.

however, the 1989 Scav Hunt list contained this little shocker:

135. A receipt from Kimbark Liquors. (R.I.P.) (5 pts.)

R.I.P.?  it closed?

i can't seem to find any information about when it closed, or for how long.  however, this doesn't seem like it would be a trick on the judges' part -- since the whole difficulty of the item would be finding someone who had a receipt from the dearly departed package store lying around in their kitchen or their wallet.

in any event, i'm glad it reopened.  i lived behind Kimbark Plaza for the year after i graduated, and since our apartment was the de facto Mock Trial party house, it was ridiculously convenient to have the liquor store right there.

HOT ROLLS! redux...

i'm starting to get the feeling that i may be able to piece together the 2013 Scav Hunt road trip from previous years' lists.  i had already found City Museum on the 2001 Scav Hunt list.  on the 1989 list, i found this item:

65.  A GracelandTM souvineer pen with a floating Elvis (Elvis really can walk on water!) (75 pts.)

okay, i muttered.  they could be asking for a Graceland item without sending the road trippers to Graceland.  heck, they could be sending the Road Trippers to Graceland, but that's understandable.  Graceland is Americana.  Graceland is pop culture.  Graceland is kitsch at its kitschiest.  this item got my attention, but it would not have alone been enough to make me go on Yet Another Repeat Rant.

but, then, i saw this:

128.  What is the home of the "throwed rolls"? (7 pts.)

we didn't catch any Throwed Rolls on the way to Graceland, this year, now, did we?  oh, wait...yes, we did.  those were the only two obvious repeats i saw between the 1989 road trip and road trip items i've done, but it's kind of crazy that they've sent the teams to the same dinner place as well as Graceland in the same year.  i wonder if there's anything else good to eat that's a few hours out of Memphis...there's got to be some other hole in the wall, right?

still, i can't fault the judges that much for sending Road Trip to Lambert's again.  those rolls are darn good.
