How long will it take me to make a sculpture? Thats a question I'm often asked. Theres no simple answer. Although shaping the clay to create the forms that the client wants is the most important part of the process, its often the stage that is under the most time pressure. How long it will take to sculpt something depends on what is required of course and how accurate the clients picture reference is. If there is a model that has been agreed on then that helps enormously. . Good reference helps one work faster, vague reference breeds uncertainty and that adds time to any project. Generally speaking the more detail that is required then the longer the project will take. The photos are of sculptures I made for 3deye in London in 2019. Each of the animals had a small model made to work from as did the Laurel and Hardy portraits. I made the small model of the walking bear. Modern and classic comedy heroes in the Scenes in the Square cinema icon trail in Leicester Square, London. Modern and classic sculpture approaches were used to create these statues. Mr Bean is a digital scan of the actor, milled and printed then turned into glass fibre. Laurel and Hardy were sculpted traditionally using steel and clay before being turned into glass fibre. When working with water based clay you have to remember to keep the bits that you aren't fiddling with, properly covered. The clay Laurel and Hardy statues that I was invited to sculpt, nearly finished at 3deye and ready to be taken away for moulding and casting in glass fibre for the Scenes in the Square sculpture trail in Leicester Square, Central London celebrating 100 years of cinema history. The 2 characters are pictured in a scene from their 1939 film Liberty where they find themselves on top of a skyscraper. The statues were made from clay over polystyrene and a metal skeleton.
