disturbing fact: the smell is so similar to that of human flesh burning that ppl whove been in traumatic situations involving ppl being burned are known to be triggered by it.

ever think abt how claire happened because allison rumoured her husband into loving her, and how she would have to do that again in the new timeline if she wanted her daughter to exist in the future bc yeh... i do

I hadn’t… it would depended on how far back they actually go and if they stick to that timeline. Would we see Alison have to rumor her husband? What are the implications of that? Is what she does/did the same as the love potion Merope used to get Tom Riddle Sr. to fall “in love” with her? 

Does Allison’s power wain, so does she have to top up her rumors? Does that matter? If she rumored her husband into their relationship, meaning that he didn’t have a choice but to love her, does mean that any sort of physical relationship they have is coerced as well? Allison wanted to be loved, and didn’t care what that would cost.

On Schematism

I'd read 'The Luminaries,' and been disappointed by what I identified as its schematism: characters are derived from astrological premises rather than organically occurring humans. Then I heard about a text by a writer I venerated, who'd given a particular character a particular physical condition in order to reflect something he perceived in his generation. And I wanted to be disappointed by that too, because I wanted what these other writers had done to be wrong so that I could do something different that was right. 

But then I wondered: why not create characters schematically? What's the other option? Random assortments? Stealing whole identities from people you happen to know? At least if you start with the horoscope you can be reasonably confident that the characters you're writing will be relevant to someone. And it lets you create one less thing. Another way of saying it would be: your writers' mind is an oyster. You'll enluster anything that gets inside. Scorpio's as good a place to start as any. And then there's this: the task in fiction isn't inventing human beings. The world does a fine job of that. The work is to show them in a sharper or a different light than the one the world offers. Justify the ways of man to man, would be one gloss on it--but you don't expect to justify. Illustrate, reveal, illuminate. Or something. So, yes, Eleanor, start with the horoscope. I may even steal it.
