“ I … I LOVE MY PAPA THE MMM … THE MOST – EST, ”
Ari’s smile grew as two little hands layered on top of each other to lay over her heart. Then she continued tenderly:
“ I … I love my Papa wi … wi … with aaaall my heart! ”

@scholarlyblade sent: comforting 😭
IT WAS LIKE WATCHING HALF OF YOUR HEART WALK DOWN a boarded path, leaving only the company of a single piece—though a precious piece; one Ari valued equally—behind. Ari tried her very best to be understanding towards the situation—as understanding as one so little could be; Cyno and Collei had things that needed their attention—important things. They MUST go, and as soon as those matters were tended to and settled, they’d return for all the love that the child so desperately wished to give them.
When might that be? They couldn’t say—they never do—and the mystery was the most overwhelming part of it all.
But little Ari was not without great comfort in their absence; she’d remain under the watchful eye of Tighnari, who cared for her with the utmost love and handled her with a remarkable gentleness, until their return. Ari found nothing about his presence unpleasant. In fact, once her upset inevitably settled and the pain in her heart was soothed ( perhaps by the touch of one’s exceptionally soft tail … ), the specific cheerfulness that Tighnari filled her heart with would beam as bright as the desert sun. However, she simply would rather that their family would remain whole for a little while longer; to have every person that made up the greatest bits of her small, delicate heart nearby, so that they could enjoy life’s little pleasures in the forest together.
GOODBYES always came too soon. Ari was never ready for them.
She could not help her tears, and Tighnari never forced her into a position where she felt the need to hold them back; so the little girl wept in her adoptive father’s hands, and even amid tearful hysterics caused by a broken heart, the child remained tender and contained; appropriate and tolerable. Mimicking his own careful, loving gesture, her tiny hands rose to Tighnari’s face and cupped his cheeks, though there were no tears of his to wipe away. It was as if the pain from her heart had seeped into her emerald eyes—like a deep shadow cast over her sunshine—for the look in her set was heartbreakingly sad. But there was a twinkle of happiness still in them, and such was only preserved because of the man who sat before her.
“ I— I mi— I miss them—” Ari sobbed through broken speech. “ I— I— I miss Lo - llei and Pa— and Papa, please … ”
“ … bu— but I lo— I love Papa, too …”
A NECESSARY reminder; despite how her little heart ached for others just now, she would not create a doubt in Tighnari’s mind that she loved him—appreciated him—any less than the two who had now long wandered off. The child shifted, scooting to the edge of her seat and leaning forward so that the struggle to embrace Tighnari was not a terrible one. Her small frame stretched, and she buried her face into his shoulder. What a comforting touch … oh yes, she loves him. She LOVES him so.
“ —wi … with all my heart.”

THE MANY WAYS THAT TIGHNARI COULD HELP quickly made their way through little Ari’s mind, though she did not consider a single one—no, the shame she currently felt was strong enough to fight any willingness for assistance, though she so desperately needed it. This negative feeling, however, was not encouraged by anything said or done by Tighnari; in fact, he made it a point to show that he believed in her—to remind her that she is more than capable of learning how to read, and that asking for help is normal and sometimes necessary.
But children do get these silly little notions in their head despite any well - made efforts, and these notions act like a heavy hand on their shoulders, holding them back from their potential.
In truth, little Ari did not want Tighnari to know that she couldn’t do it—she could not make sense of the word on the paper, for it was far too big for her mouth to allow her to say out loud, and there were far too many letters for her brain to jumble and flip—she was simply desperate to show that she could do it; that she could make him proud without his help!
This, of course, brought a faint blush to her cheeks, and she felt herself growing more and more overwhelmed with each passing second, as the word never formed properly during any of them. She stirred in her chair, shaking her head.
“ nnn … no, thank you … ” Was her short response, said as sweetly as she could currently make it, though her frustration with herself accidentally seeped into her tone. It was very much audible to even the most inattentive ear.
“ I … I can do it, ple … please … I … I can read it— ”

the annoyed look he gave the other over one shoulder was all the answer the wanderer needed to give — a resounding NO. this stranger, this forest watcher ... who did he think he was? as if knowing his way around a few trees suddenly gave him the right to tell him what to do? ( if he only knew who he was speaking with, surely he would hold his tongue. ) the arrogance on display was so astounding, it made his head spin.
❝ if i wanted your advice, i would have asked for it. ❞ the wanderer shot back. he wasn’t especially fond of having conversations sprung on him to begin with. ❝ contrary to what you seem to believe, i’m not nearly so INCOMPETENT — so if you’re worried i may wander off and find myself eaten by a rishboland tiger, don’t be. ❞ he turned, gesturing ( proudly ) to his vision. ❝ as you can plainly see, i am more than capable of taking care of myself. ❞ he then punctuated the statement by spinning on his heel — storming off at a brisk pace that just barely straddled the line between a walk and a light jog. if he was lucky, perhaps he could shake him.
❝ farewell, then. have a nice life. ❞ he gave a dismissive wave.
