I was always pressured to do well in everything (toxic mindset). To this day I don’t know what was my ‘best‘ or favorite subject; some came easier than others, but looking back, when I got good grades, I can’t tell when it was because of talent, the teacher, or simply me pushing myself (too) hard. Plus there’s the expectation that some subjects will be harder in general. And something being easy is different from it being interesting. The subjects I was ‘best’ at didn’t end up being the ones I decided to build a career in.
It’s toxic the way we’re taught to focus on grades, and often ruins our relationship with an academic subject we might have found fulfilling under different circumstances. It limits our growth, and makes us think that we’re not the ‘type’ of student who can go on to do certain things.
Pro tip: if it interests you, you can almost certainly do it. It could be your ‘worse’ subject, and you could still build a thrilling, fulfilling career in the field if that’s where you wanted to be). Also: when a subject is difficult, often that means you’re not ready for that level yet. It doesn’t mean that you never will be, or that that subject isn’t ‘yours’. More than once I’ve failed a class and gone on to retake and complete it successfully. I’ve failed classes in the subject that ended up becoming my major. Your talents lie in many directions, and are still developing.
Some things we should be taught to ask:
Is it interesting to learn?
If not, is it because of my relationship with the topic or with the way it’s being taught?
Do I enjoy this type of work? Why not? What could change this?
What do I want to achieve from this class?
Is my motivation just a grade, or is there something else I want to come away with?
If I’d been told to think of these things, I probably would have ended up taking more useful/fulfilling classes in high school and college. I wouldn’t have felt the need to exhaust myself on advanced classes I didn’t like or need. I would have pursued balance and my motivations would have been healthy, not fear-based (highly unsustainable, and harmful). I would have broadened my horizons by exploring new subjects even when my ‘future’ wasn’t in them. I would have been more open-minded about my options and switched more quickly to a major that suited me. As it turned out, I was introduced to my major only after signing up for a class because it fit my schedule and seemed interesting. It was a happy accident, but shouldn’t have had to be.
Ideally, you should because you want to, not because you’re supposed to.
And again, please don’t let bad experiences prejudice you against a subject. Keep your options open by getting broad qualifications. Yes, even when it means putting more working into a subject you don’t like. I disliked math, but it ended up being an important prereq for my actual major. You can consider yourself an arts/english person, but don’t give up on science/math. And vice versa. I’ve had art friends go into animation and find math entirely necessary, I’ve had science major friends whose jobs ended up required strong english/communication skills. Don’t decide too early that your interests and talents lie only in one direction. There’s no one thing you’re meant to be doing. If everything is easy, that means you aren’t learning. Unfortunately, you’re guaranteed to have a few bad teachers, and a few classes that make materially unnecessarily difficult to learn. And we all have bad semesters, patches were things pile up or our health gets in the way. Struggling is not a reflection on you or your potential. You are limitless.

There is often much debate and scrutiny whether academic achievement determines overall intelligence. This is how I feel.
Grades are in no way an accurate reflection on a person's overall intelligence. Grades determine a few things. Here are a few. Firstly, how well you can memorize notes. Secondly, how well you can stay on task. Thirdly, how well you can write essays or do equations based on what the curriculum expects. I've seen many exceptional people whose grades aren't at a pinnacle. They can, without a doubt, write, calculate and do anything between those academic confines better than a person with a 95% average for example.
However, I feel that grades are tickets to a job and a good living. There are instances whereby some exceptionally bright people in society drop out of high school or college, but in comparison to people who have the same educational background, it is extremely rare. Most people who do graduate high school or university however go on to have stable lives without much financial and economic burden. If someone wanted to become a doctor for say, schools would look at their grades unfortunately. At that point it would be best to just bite the bullet and do well, even if you feel like schools are teaching rubbish. Cognitive dissonance perhaps.
In sum, I think grades are not reflection of a person's intellect, but instead a safety net that would get you what you minimally desire as an adult. You can of course not do well in school and hope to find a decent living, but that's at your own risk.
