The Last Sprint

Hey guys! Long time no speak I think. I dunno, it’s been a wild ride. So I’m in the LAST run through school. THE LAST few hours. I’m at 1115 of 1500. I’m almost there. 385 hours. I can TASTE it. That’s just about 38 days, with 10 hour days. And I wouldn’t be this far without your support. Financially, socially, loving and determined and joyous with victories and consoling with defeats. I’m SO CLOSE I can’t stand it. At 1201 hours I’m evaluated for my final disbursal from financial aid, where I have a rather substantial payout coming my way. I have just about nine days in class to make it to that, and then maybe a two week waiting period. I need to survive just four weeks and then I’m in the free and clear. I’ve stopped working while I get the last of my hours in, because I have just over 38 days left. I want to kick this thing SO HARD and I’m gonna be finishing in august, it looks like, with the days off for the 4th messing with my schedule. This summer is going to be hell guys. I’m making it work though. My school costs haven’t changed. It’s still about 19$/day for transportation and about 20$/day for food, covering two meals. I’m working with someone to bring those costs down as part of a lunch co-op. I also have gas money concerns, and it’s about 30$/2 weeks, but with rising gas prices that’s going to be more like 40$/2 weeks. So to survive I’m going to need just a last push down that slope. Fundraising week 10

Hello everyone! Welcome back to the weekly fundraiser! So far last week: I ACED MY FINALS. I’m super proud of that, actually. I’m 100% in Practicals and the State Board is gonna be EASY at this rate. I was SUPPOSED to get a job offer. But someone in the salon I was going to be working at let her licence lapse, and so she’s...doing my job. OH WELL. It does mean I’m back on the job search grind! So far I’ve applied to several dozen jobs in my area, gotten a call back appointment from one, and the person NEVER CALLED. So I’m expecting that position to be filled already. Oh well. More applications it is! One of the problems I have is that I don’t have a drivers license. I’m hoping to be able to take the test soon, but that’s a while off. I’ve got a handful of things to do first, like finish learning how to drive. If I had a vehicle, I’d be working as a delivery driver 100%, or as a manager. I’m over-qualified for most entry level positions, and under-equipped for management. THIS MEANS THAT MY INCOME IS STILL ZERO, and I have to eat and get to/from school this week! I’m hoping for a job callback next weekend so that I can start by Friday. NO promises but that’s the goal.

My transportation costs for three days is 45$, at 15$ a day. This is with bus and metro two ways, from Centreville VA to Chinatown DC, a 30 mile trip one way. (I’m COMMITTED guys. I’m making it work. I’ve got a 98% attendance rate!) Food is still  about 20$ a day, and I’ve given the household my EBT card for the month so that we can get groceries. I’ve got not-school days covered. I’ve also found the Subway near school, so I’m going to see if I can cut my food costs while still keeping my balanced diet. This means that my TOTAL SCHOOL SURVIVAL COSTS are $105 a week. I’ve currently got 30$ saved from last week, because of several generous donations! Y’all. So far, you’ve kept me above water. I can’t even begin to describe how grateful I am that you’ve supported me this far. You’ve been my ANGELS and I’m forever going to be paying this forward. Operation: School Zone

Hello everyone!

I want to start off today by saying a MASSIVE THANK YOU to everyone who helped out with my campaign for last week, getting me the funds needed to make an AMAZING dress for the Aveda catwalk for water. I didn’t win the full ride scholarship. Why? Who knows. BUT WE DID SO GOOD. My model was amazing, the concept was outstanding, and the whole thing was possible because this community made it so. Because of your help, I have a 1000$ scholarship IN THE BAG. I’m completely funded for school tuition through both a Pell grant and federally subsidized loans. However, I don’t get any overflow disbursement until possibly August, most likely October. SO WE ARE ON THE FUNDRAISING TRAIN AGAIN! The full breakdown of my expenses are as follows, so that y’all can see my budget for the next 6 months! I hope this also helps people who are looking to either budget for themselves, and offers insight as to where I get my numbers! These include expenses for April 2018 through the end of October 2018. Rent: $3000 (THE BIG ONE, but also one that I can fundraise for over time! I pay 500 a month right now, and I do owe some back rent.)

Groceries: $2400 (This includes meals for school, and groceries for home. If you want my full budget breakdown of this I can post that!)

Transportation: $1080 (Metro rides during peak hours for six months. This does not include Uber or Lyft fares, parking, or gas money. This number is likely to change if I manage to get a student discount metro card, but that’s not done yet.)

Household expenses: $800 (This is for things like toiletries, personal supplies, cleaning supplies, and any small household repairs that may crop up.)

I think to myself sometimes what it would be like trying to do this without a full time salary job, I think back to deciding not to pursue a PhD program right after getting an MA because I honestly couldn't afford it. Then if I get it, there is tuition, which for 3 hours of graduate school equals nearly 6-9 hours of undergrad in cost, books, travel, and the fact that I have to move and quit my job unless 2 of the 6-8 schools I apply to accept me.

This is the most anxiety I have on a daily basis thinking about this. Wondering what I will have to go through to get ready for August, when most schools don't let you know until March/April if you are in. 4 months to quit my job, find a new one, find a place to live, my wife to find a job, etc. 

This is why I hate people who claim student have it easy today, that minimum wage isn't a big deal, that working harder and furthering your career is what we have to do to succeed. These are people who haven't been in this situation, who haven't had to cut back in order to buy books, who haven't had to make the tough decisions or spend months or years paying off credit cards just to apply to schools, let alone attend them.

Sorry I had to rant, I'm stressing out too much concerning PhD applications and I needed to share. School is expensive and something needs to change drastically.
