Annual Elections 2018-19: Casting of vote is the right of every student in a school. Keeping the spirit of Indian democracy, SSRVM, Bhugaon conducted its Annual elections on June 20th, 2018. The...
I had always supported reducing the voting age to 16, but after today I’m not quite so sure.
It’s polling day and unfortunately, unlike a lot of my friends, I’m unable to have my say in this general election due to having a late birthday. However, I was thrilled to find out that my school were holding their very own mock election, a brilliant way of getting the students politically engaged.
However, once the votes are counted up, it was clear that a lot of students weren’t taking the voting seriously, with 188 votes for UKIP. With all the childish banter I heard in the corridors, and what I had heard from teachers, it was clear that a lot of their votes, which caused UKIP to come third in our mock election were nothing more than a joke.
Yes, a lot of these votes will have been from 12-year-old, pre-pubescent boys, but not all. These 16/17-year-olds, who voted UKIP for no other purpose than banter, could be given the right to vote if policies driven by The Greens, Plaid Cymru and and the SNP take place.
In a real election, would these teenagers really vote for what they believe in, or turn their vote into a joke just like they did today?
Registering and going down to polling station surely require far too much effort for a joke. I’m hoping that if the voting age is reduced, the younger than ever first time voters will acknowledge that their vote really does count and put some thought into it.
School politics
Went into school to see loads of pointless ‘Vote Green’ posters up everywhere...oh the irony!
editing speeches is hell T-T
So these, uh, kids from my school made a campaign video.
A girl's slogan campaign at school is "Vote for Brisa it rhymes with pizza"
Let us talk about credentials.
Having a quite number of credentials is a plus for an individual. Especially when he is trying to aim for a specific position. Now is the time wherein school elections are scheduled. Earlier today, I saw thr posters of two parties running for the College Student Council. And instead of convincing me to vote them, I decided not to vote anyone. Why? Simply because of how they put credentials. In their list of credentials, they included the credentials they got since high school. Even being a candidate of pageants is considered a credential. Come on. Is it really a credential? Having that kind of list leaves impression to students that elections are for the people who are "popular" only. But here's the thing. Not all credentials are given to those people who deserve it. Somebody else do the work but another one gets credential. That always happen. So reading a list of it doesn't convince students to support you. Not anymore. Especially those students who take voting as a serious thing. Just a suggestion. Instead posting your credentials, why don't you put your platforms? That is more important than credentials. Just so you know.
