Ron Gubitz, Turnaround Arts National Leadership Coach

As former principal at ReNEW Cultural Arts Academy, we were incredibly lucky to be selected by President Obama's Committee on the Arts and Humanities as one of eight pilot Turnaround Arts schools.  We were given training and support in arts integration, paired with Alfre Woodard who mentored and supported our school and students, and began the challenging but important work of leveraging the Arts in many areas of our school.

Once the press release hit the newspapers, I received an email from Elise and Echo asking to meet up. Having never heard of KID smART, I was curious and took the meeting. We quickly hit it off. I was astonished by the level of arts integrated coaching and support they could provide my school while working within our budget.

KID smART paired Bonnie Gabel, an experienced teaching artist and coach, with our school. She led whole-staff professional development sessions and co-planned, co-taught, and co-led arts integrated, standards-aligned instruction with a cohort of my teachers. My teachers LOVED working with Bonnie and embraced new strategies and ways of teaching that made such a positive impact for our students in both engagement and academic growth. In many ways, the work Bonnie did supporting our school was the key piece that really brought the ideals and dreams of the Turnaround Arts program to life in our classrooms.

KID smART was a key partner in helping our students engage in a real, meaningful, academically enriching way while providing an identity and morale boost for our staff. Now, as I work as a national leadership coach for Turnaround Arts, I've had the opportunity to learn from and work with dozens of arts integration organizations. I truly believe KID smART is a first-in-class partner making this important work happen in schools.
