My name is Arun Shrestha, an Electrical Engineer currently working at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (SEL) (www.selinc.com) in Charlotte, NC. I am also a graduate student, actively pursuing my PhD in Power Engineering at University of North Carolina at Charlotte (www.uncc.edu)
I have been following the GMIN team and their amazing effort to build schools in Nepal for last two years. I admire the courage and effort GMIN has put together to build/renovate multiple schools, in various districts of Nepal. I truly believe that 'Education' is a must for a sustainable development for any community, village and country. One can easily co-relate the direct relationship between development and literacy rate of a country.
Since the encounter, I have always wanted to get involved in a project that involved building/helping schools in remote villages in Nepal. The opportunity to make my dream a reality came through my company in the form of 'SEL School Donation' program. Every year our company donates $100 to a school recommended by its employees. So, with help from GMIN team, we selected "Shree Madhyamik Vidhyala" of Dang District for 'SEL School Donation' for 2012. This school has a couple hundred students that we felt would benefit from the donation. Once, I got the necessary information about the school, I sent out an email to everyone in my office requesting them to consider our school for donation. I gave them an explanation as to why and how they will be making a difference in a kid’s life by their donations. I also sent an email to Nepali people working in different field offices in my company to support the cause. I uploaded the school's information on our office donation database so that interested employees had the option to read about and choose the school. Fortunately, 14 SEL employees decided to recommend our school for SEL School Donation program. I am glad that we were able to direct the donation of $1400 to the school via GMIN. I hope that other people will use their work's charity programs to help schools in Nepal.
I am overjoyed to have gotten this opportunity to give back to our community through my company SEL via GMIN. I believe in the statement: 'If not us, who will? and if not now, when?’ I hope, over the years, I will have more opportunities where I can help too give back to the community that raised me. Thank You.
