just realized i never posted my finished project here. i didn’t love it, i struggle so much with digital painting and graphic design still. but i think i did a decent job for the time i had. and im just glad i was able to complete it and the Science Illustration Course. :)

i think the carbon cycle images i find on the internet are a little boring and also a little too harmonious?
i want my illustration to put emphasis on how the fossil fuel industry throws off the balance. i want to make it artistic and not just a bunch of arrows and cute plants, in order to show a “the four nations lived in harmony until the fire nation attacked” vibe.
this is the first exercise of the course: a moodboard for reference.
why is decision making so hard
i need to choose the topic for my final project as soon as possible. it can be about biological (or life) cycles, or neuroscience.
some options that come to mind are
- carbon cycle. i have done a handful of projects the last year that relate to the carbon cycle so i guess i know enough about it to just do my own take on it? there are many images already out there so it shouldn’t be hard to take inspiration from them. this would involve drawing a big landscape to fit trees, factories, the ocean, etc.
- something about astronomy? only because i like it. i could do the life cycle of stars (apparently a previous student did the life cycle of galaxies for this course once). but i have no experience drawing space things with detail.
- something microscopic like DNA replication. i did a homework once explaining with drawings how DNA replication worked and it was very pretty maybe i could redo it with cooler tools. most images to find on this are very textbook-y and simple so i could try a more ?? artistic? take? i think??

Next assignment was to make a few very rough drafts to figure out the composition of the illustration. i need to make up my mind and choose a distribution of the elements to start and finish a neat draft due today (thanks procrastination) but i’m still not sure i like any of these.
the ones that look best i think are when the pollution due to the oil industry part is in the center of in a focal point in the foreground. the first option puts a Lot of attention into the human aspect and the second one allows me to make a nice circle shape for the cycle and then add pollution on one side creeping towards the rest.

a flower from my mom’s garden. iphone can apparently help you identify plants from your pictures and it says this is a kind of ipomoea though i haven’t found exactly which. the leaves don’t seem to match any of the ones i see. they really are black which took my by surprise the first time i saw them.
guess who procrastinated this weeks homework until the last day :)
not sure if i can pull it off. i’m trying really hard, though.

day 14: squishy.
I wanted to draw a jellyfish but i don’t have the materials to draw it like i wanted to, so i decided to do it with inverted colors, it even glows!
