Hi there, I just took your quiz and it's really detailed which is super cool to see! I noticed you talked about the idea of primaries and secondaries briefly in the quiz intro, and as someone who's read a bunch about sortinghatchats's sorting hat system, I'm interested in reading more about the thought process you have behind the 4 elements personality types, + about secondaries if you've thought that out too. Are you planning to publish more posts about the elements as personality types?
(continued from other ask) No pressure though, if you're not planning to share more about your sorting system for the elements! Feel free to ignore this ask if you don't feel like answering it / don't have time to, but I can't tell if I'm a firebender or an airbender, so I'm wondering what some good ways to distinguish between being one versus the other is?
genuinely i wasn’t planning on going further than this quiz. mostly bc i didn’t think it’d blow up the way it has. i thought at most it was gonna be me, my friends, and then some friends of friends taking it, so any further discussions would’ve just been with them.
i will say i went to sleep thinking about this ask and if i were to further this sort of system, it would look different than sortinghatchats system bc in accordance with avatar’s laws, only the avatar could master all four elements lmao. but i do think the sub types of bending like lightning, healing, metal, etc, would be interesting avenues to explore. like maybe if you admire/replicate the qualities of a waterbender when you’re naturally a firebender, youd be great at redirecting lightning. for me personally, i already know i might never be able to lightning bend--at least not with who i am currently
i think with that tho i’d have to get a bit more creative and explore theoretical subtypes bc some elements have more than others. i won’t say furthering this whole system is completely out of the cards, but it might take me a longer time to figure out--both bc im doing a spring/summer semester for school and bc i’d have to explore outside what’s already been shown in atla and lok (and information provided by the creators that i could just look up)
in terms about essential differences between air and fire, i will say now that the longer you think of the elements, the harder it is to distinguish the differences between them bc so many different qualities intertwine and interweave with each other, but its supposed to??? the elements work together and rely on each other bc thats how balance works. anyways i digress, back to the question.
one major difference is that fire is an external element, while air is internal. so, external means taking care of your body first, eventually leading to working and developing your mind and internal means working on and developing your mind first, which will then lead to working and developing the body. the most basic example of this would be people who work out when they’re angry vs. someone who sits in their feelings. or even someone who can’t recognize they’re in a toxic situation until they’ve been physically removed from it vs someone who can identify who their stressor is when they’re in the room. so the first question is to ask yourself which you are. do you work from the inside-out or the outside-in?
also, fire is pre-meditative--which i think is what trips people up the most. people assume fire is reactionary and it’s not intended to be. it can be IMPULSIVE, yeah, but there’s some distinction to be made there. impulsive is just acting thoughtlessly, which for firebenders is considered a weakness. it represents the “worst” aspects of a firebenders bc that’s how they can hurt or be hurt. when they’re faced with conflict or going to enter into conflict, they want to think it through or at least be able to think it through. not to be a narcissist, but for me as a firebender, i’m hella impulsive, but the distinction for me is that i pick and choose my fights. my impulsivity makes me chaotic (in a fun way) and the worst person to get into a fight with. when i’m going to tackle conflict or trying to even voice a concern, i will spend my time deciding if it’s worth the struggle. if i don’t think it’s worth my energy, i’ll just wait for the immediate moment to pass.
air, on the other hand, is the opposite. they usually work in the moment and they don’t look at that as a bad thing bc truthfully they’re natural inclinations already make them excellent at avoiding conflict. they will lie without second thought if it means avoiding an argument where a firebender’s natural instinct is usually to say what they think is right (if you find yourself spitting out harsh truths impulsively, you might be a firebender, but if you find yourself trying to exit out of an argument by quieting yourself, you might be an airbender). also airbenders work with life rather than against it (fire will work against life if they think they need to). air looks at the things already present around them and try to see how it can be used in their favour. they won’t make a fuss unless they’re absolutely desperate.
my last imparting point: airbenders operate on necessity, firebenders operate on want and worth. “do i need this? do i need to do this?” vs. “do i want this? is this worth doing?”
hopefully this helps. if you have any further questions, feel free to ask!!
