Today I celebrated my one year anniversary at work! 🎉🎉

Being an adult is crazy and having a job that pays actual money (not just food and boat fuel). It took me a long time to adjust and get used to the "grind" but I think I've finally figured out how to this.

I'm def becoming a weekend warrior. Grinding away Monday - Friday and doing something cool every weekend. Beaching it, fishing, traveling somewhere, camping you name it. Being able to be outside makes being inside 5 days a week not so bad.

I will always wish for a job where I can be outside and fish everyday while still making good money (that's the dream right?!), but for now I'm happy where I've gotten and wouldn't trade it for anything.

** I'm trying to post more but since I don't have fun fishy facts everyday, I'm just going to ramble on about how things are going.

Continuing with the theme of reproducibility, Akorn has recently read about a new initiative from Science Exchange, Mendeley, PLoS ONE, and Figshare. The 'Reproducibility Initiative' offers research groups a platform for purchasing a reproducibility test. This involves submitting your results to the Initiative, who will find an appropriate independent research group and commission them to attempt to validate your findings. If successful, you'll receive a Certificate of Reproducibility from the Initiative.

It's an interesting concept. If widely adopted, it could help to combat some of the problems with rigour discussed in our recent blog post. On the other hand, it could simply shift the goal-post - who's checking the validators? And more pragmatically, will people actually want to pay?

We'll be watching how it pans out! Whatever happens, the Reproducibility Initiative is a great idea because it is helping to bring the problem of rigour in science out into the light. Hopefully we'll be seeing more such initiatives in the future.

Научная Биржа привлекла $1.5 мио

На днях, Science Exchange, которую изначально поднял проект Y Combinator, привлекла дополнительно $1.5 мио долларов от элитной группы инвесторов под потранажем венчурного фонда Andreessen Horowitz с участием Юрия Мильнера (Mail.ru Group и DST Global) и других.

Проект был запущен в августе и предоставляет ученым возможность находить и аутсорсить свои опыты, которые они не могут поставить у себя, другим институтам, которые имеют нужное оборудование.

Напомню, что Научная Биржа не является единственным стартапом в академической среде. Ранее Kaggle привлек $11 мио долларов и Academia.edu подтянула $4.5 мио долларов.
