Darth Vader - Rogue One IMAX Premiere at Science North

Got asked to cosplay as Darth Vader with a rented costume and it was definitely an experience. Hot as Tatooine in there, but still fun! It’s an older costume, so it’s really a blast from the past for mass produced costume design.

As a cosplayer, it definitely got my gears going on how one would make it better (more ventilated etc). Makes me wonder how they did it back then and now.

Props to Vader cosplayers everywhere.

So in Sudbury Ontario there’s this wonderful, magical place called Science North. It's a place where children and adults can abandon their “too cool for school” attitude and geek out on awesome science stuff! They have machine building, Electricity conducting, CGI creating, fossil digging, and so much more.

In their fossils and minerals section they actually have a set up of lapidary machines! Naturally I couldn’t resist ❤️ I picked this lovely soft Chrysocolla and just let the shape inspire me.

It’s unusual as jewellery cabochons go I guess, but that was really half the fun! And just look at the pattern and colours! It reminds me of neural patterns for some reason. Or a thunderstorm, or a raging sea storm. Nature is so friggin cool sometimes.

Ella & Pitr to Paint a Large Scale Rooftop Mural at Science North for Up Here 2016

After much community input and evaluating various locations around Sudbury, the world record breaking muralists Ella & Pitr and Up Here festival have chosen the Special Exhibits Hall at Science North as the location for a new large scale rooftop mural that will be completed for Up Here festival in August.

Ella & Pitr are a french muralist team from Saint-Étienne, France who are known for painting large-scale murals in public places around the world. The dynamic duo specializes in aerial murals on rooftops that can be viewed from above and through videos that live online after their completion. The internationally acclaimed artists will be arriving in Sudbury on August 6th to start working on the piece and will be completing it during the week leading up to Up Here festival that takes place August 11-13th.

“For more than 30 years, Science North continues to be an architectural and cultural landmark in the City of Greater Sudbury and throughout Northern Ontario,” said Guy Labine, CEO of Science North. “Science North and the Up Here team share a common culture of innovation and inspiration. We are thrilled to be part of this exciting project. The Science North rooftop is a perfect canvas to showcase this creativity.”

Internationally acclaimed Ella & Pitr

They started their “grands dormeurs” series (giant sleepers) in 2007 and have since completed pieces all over the world, including in France, Italy, Japan, Chili, Portugal, the US and Canada. They exploded onto the international art scene in 2015 during the NuART Festival in Norway where they completed their largest work yet, which is currently being evaluated by the Guinness World Record for the title of the World’s Largest Mural.

“Ella & Pitr are kind of a big deal in the public art world. This will quite literally put Sudbury on the map and has the potential to inspire the way we look at our home. Public art helps people form a sense that there’s something special about the place where they live. With the landmark that is Science North, beautiful Ramsey Lake and Bell Park in the background, we really couldn’t imagine a better location for Ella & Pitr’s first mural in Ontario,” says Christian Pelletier, co-founder of Up Here.

A Unique Festival Experience

Up Here, formerly Up Fest, is a public art festival that culminates in an emerging music festival, and is topped off by a night of art installations. It’s eight muralists working on new murals during the week leading up to the festival. It’s over 45 musicians in over 12 venues for three jam-packed days. Up Here is where the weird and wonderful collide under city lights.
