So I learned recently that there is no real scientific definition for fish. It's just "creature that exists in water." This means that frogs are fish. Clams are fish. Humans are fish if they're in water. And since mermaids are humanoid fish, that means you turn into a mermaid every time you take a shower or go swimming. You are a mermaid as often as you get wet.
(Being a mermaid also means you're a manatee.)
