I really had to think about this one ngl.

But I think it's gonna have to be a bit of a two parter:

There are people able and willing to help her out and

She really could do with asking for that help

Like, getting dropped into twst, going through the shock of that and then also the overblots? It really does turn things into just survival for her at points, trying to cope with all that.

Like, of course there's good stuff too - learning about magic, making friends (eventually) and all that.

But she very much tries not to think about just how hard her life has been shaken up, and how fragile it's left her in certain respects - at least not until it all just overwhelms her to the point she can't just act like she's still got a lid on it. Just gotta focus on the day to day.

Aunt Nerine - [ 🫀 ]ㅤ.ㅤwho taught them what love is ? did it hurt ?

Most of her experience is second hand, so it's people around her, family and friends, but also stories she's heard and things like that which she mostly draws from (the amount of romance she's read is certainly impressive).

Like, yes, there was the thing with Maleanor, but that never got to the point of love.

What she's learned probably boils down to something like:

love is valuable and worth pursuing, even taking risks for

most people will absolutely waste time faffing around if they're not nudged along (almost like they don't have the benefit of the information her signature spell affords her, funny, that)

And of course, she's nothing if not helpful 😇

So while she's certainly been burned when trying to be helpful (see the Briar Valley incident linked above), I wouldn't really say love itself has hurt her.

1 - Who fell first? Who fell harder?

…The nerd that I am, I had to make a graph for this (pretty sure I already alluded to something like this somewhere when talking about these two).

Like, it’s not super exact, especially on the y-axis, because it’s not like this is that quantifiable, but it gets the idea and the general trends across.

0 here stands for a completely neutral opinion, above zero is positive feelings / opinions and below zero negative ones.

I feel like this illustrates their different journeys with their feelings quite nicely. (Oof, that drop and gap after book 4 😭)

So, for your question. Yeah, Jamil totally fell first.

As for who fell harder, though. 🤔

Emi certainly wears her heart on her sleeve a lot more than Jamil does. She’s also more willing to risk it and take a chance with her feelings.

Then again, Jamil’s the one who’s really putting in the effort to bridge the gap between the two after book 4 - even if it may start from a more selfish motivation of doing damage control after his overblot and everything. At least, that’s what he’s gonna be telling himself, totally practical reasons.

To be honest, I do think they both fall hard, even if it’s at their own pace. Like, especially once they’re more established, they’re both gonna have those moments of “oh goodness I’m getting so much love from this person, how can I ever give as much as they deserve in return”.

Basically, it’s gonna be a total sapville for these two, at least eventually.

So I kinda wanna be a sap and say both, tbh. Really depends on what situation and what point in time we're looking at, tho.

23 - Who said "I love you" first?

Both of them seem like the sort to wait a while before going for something that intense. Emi also comes from a culture where one doesn’t use the word ‘love’ quite as easily as one would in for example (american) English. (Basically, this is me giving my experiences with Finnish versus English usage of the word love to her, since she pretty much is Finnish in my head. In Finnish, we might often still stick to using the word ‘like’ in situations where an English speaker might already talk about loving something.)

And like, from Jamil’s side, I feel like he wouldn’t jump on it too quickly either (man sure has to practice his emotional vulnerability).

Still, I kinda feel like along with the first confession of feelings, this will go to Emi, but it's probably going to be like a few months to them dating before it happens.

for emi: If they could go back in time and talk to themselves, what age would they want to talk to? What would they say?

for aunt nerine: Do they enjoy being a part of student gossip/actively involved in student drama? (this is a faculty question, but i feel like it still fits ahdshs)

Going back in time to talk to their past self

Ngl, maybe this is just me being old, but it kinda feels like Emi’s still a bit young to have such wisdom to impart, lol.

But, I think she’d go back to like her 11-12 year old elementary schooler self and tell her that she is indeed making the right call in wanting to change up her friend group come middle school. Perhaps also some guidance in some things relating to her parents or just some practical matters she wishes she’d known more about earlier.

Probably nothing direct about magic being real and stuff, but perhaps something indirect about how she’s going to be getting to experience some of those things she’s been dreaming about.

A lot depends on when exactly Emi would go back, though. Like, if it’s in the earlier parts of her stay in Twisted Wonderland (...especially after book 4, ngl, that certainly is a low point for her, though the whole first year is rough), she’d probably honestly want to figure out a way to keep herself from getting to Twisted Wonderland, whatever that way would be. Like, sure, magic’s cool, but it’s just such a rough and stressful experience for her that while she’s in the middle of it, she’d rather just not have it happen at all.

So if there’s anything she could think of warning herself for, that might be related to her transportation, she’d probably mention it, if she was going back during those roughest times.

(When it all becomes worth it enough that she wouldn’t rather regain what she lost from her own world, well… that sure is a question alright 🙃)

Student drama

At the risk of being obvious, she’d sure live for the relationship drama, lol. Plus, I think she’d be interested in learning more about the exploits of the particularly audacious members of the student body.

There’d be a bit of a vested interest in hearing what is being said about Lilia and Malleus. She’d love to regale Lilia with what the students think/say about him, and having a laugh with him about any misconceptions the other students have.

obviously Jamil is the one screaming directions at Liz while she handles the spiders and other insects alike lol. prior to living in Ramshackle Liz didn't have much experience with handling bugs but she quickly became accustom to it once she realized neither the ghosts nor Grim were going to be helpful.

doubly so the moment she discovered how petrified Jamil becomes in their presence, the first time she heard him scream bloody murder over a bug on the wall left her shocked fr. now any time a spider even looks in their direction Liz is already fixing Jamil with an eyebrow raise and a playful tease, Jamil would rebuke he weren't so fixated on keeping his guard up incase the creature somehow escapes her grasp.

neither of them would become particularly jealous in fact there's a very vague sense of satisfaction watching others trying to shoot their shots and failing.

Liz finds gratification in others agreeing with her viewpoint that Jamil is a catch and boyfriend material, that she truly lucked out having her feelings reciprocated considering their circumstances. its only when someone becomes uncomfortably insistent or if its someone of higher status than Jamil that Liz steps in and introduces herself as his girlfriend (all bets are off if anything happens after)

Jamil gets a stroke to his ego watching Liz reject someone outright, she's been painfully straightforward the moment she confessed to him its harder to doubt her loyalty at this point (the exception of course being Kalim but both have assured him multiple times that their relationship is platonic)
