"Kira!! Come help me decorate the tree!" Scott lugged a box of decorations from the garage, dumping it on the living room floor.
"Be careful! Don't scratch the hardwood floor!" Kira warned, shouting from the kitchen. The couple had just moved into their new house a month ago, and they were still trying to work out their traditions.
Kira appeared in the doorway. "The turkey's in the oven," she signed, wiping her hands on her apron.
"I've never had turkey on Christmas," Scott commented.
"Turkey is a normal Christmas dish," Kira rebutted.
"Turkey's for Thanksgiving," Scott argued, pulling a string of ornaments out of the box.
Kira rushed over to help him. “Come on, just suck it up and have the turkey,” she joked.
Scott chuckled. “Here.” He handed Kira a box of lights. She smiled, carefully taking the lights and stringing them on the tree.
“Perfect,” Scott sighed. He began placing ribbons on the tree. “Get the angel.” Scott motioned toward the box.
“I’ve never had an angel before.” Kira carefully boosted the figure on top of the tree. “I’ve only ever placed a star on the tip of the tree.”
Just then, the oven beeped. “Gotta do a quick temperature check,” Kira mumbled.
Scott followed her to the kitchen. “I’ll make some eggnog!”
“I’ve actually never had eggnog before,” Kira laughed.
“Wonderful! Because I make a great eggnog,” Scott replied. He opened the refrigerator and pulled out a carton of eggs.
Kira watched as Scott quickly mixed ingredients.
The phone rang and Kira rushed to pick it up. “Hello?”
“Hi! Is this Kira? It’s Melissa!”
“Yes! Hey Melissa! How are you?”
Kira turned the phone on speaker as Scott looked up.
“I’m doing great! I just wanted to wish you two Merry Christmas!”
“Hi mom!” Scott exclaimed, rinsing his hands and picking up the phone.
“Hey, Scotty!” Melissa and Scott shared a short conversation as Kira portioned the eggnog into mugs and set them by the fireplace. She grabbed a lighter, carefully rearranging the logs before lighting them.
Scott soon met Kira in the living room.
“Melissa’s so sweet,” Kira murmured, patting the couch. Scott took some blankets from an unpacked box and sat down, snuggling closer to Kira.
“Yep.” Scott pulled a blanket over Kira and himself. “You know, I’ve never lit an actual fireplace. I always thought that they were just there for decoration, really.”
Kira rolled her eyes and picked up the mugs of eggnog, handing one to Scott.
“Thanks,” he mumbled, sipping from the mug.
“Merry Christmas, Scott.” Kira set her head on Scott’s shoulder.
Scott pulled Kira closer. “Merry Christmas, Kira.”

Scott’s kitchen was full of cookies.
There had been a point in Kira’s life when this had still been surprising, but now, she was pretty used to it. “What are you gonna do with all these cookies?” she asked.
From his position at the table, flopped over in exhaustion in a chair, he said, “Give ‘em away.”
“You said that before,” she says, yawning herself. She and Scott had been baking all afternoon, and had only stopped a few moments before. She wanted to curl up on his lap now, face tucked into his neck…
But they weren’t there yet. She could respect that.
Clearing her throat, she went to sit next to him, moving her chair as close as she could without being obvious. “When are you doing it? And who’s on the list this year?”
“Mom and I always go caroling on the 23rd of December and bring these with us,” he said, observing his kitchen.
She glanced at her phone to confirm her suspicions. “Today is the 23rd.“
“Oh,” he said, and jumped to his feet. “I gotta load the car, like, right now.”
He started rushing around the kitchen and grabbing boxes of cookies.
Kira moved more sluggishly, but she followed behind him, making her own stack of cookies and following him downstairs. It only took about three trips like that before his backseat was filled, and then the two of them were off.
“It’s already night, and I still have the rest of the batches,” he lamented.
“Dude, don’t worry,” she said, reaching over to stroke his arm. “We will totally handle this.” She let her fingers linger for a moment, and then settled back into her seat. “So, what are we singing?”
“Just basic ones—Rudolph, We Wish You a Merry Christmas—that kind of thing. You know ‘em?”
“Sure,” she said, shrugging. “What about Frosty?”
He nodded and started to pull into a parking lot of an apartment complex. “Ready?”
“Yup,” she said, and hopped out of the car. “Let’s do it.”
-
She was exhausted by the third building in the apartment complex, but they still had 2/3 of the boxes Scott had set up in the backseat. Who knew Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer could be so annoying when you had to sing it over and over?
On the bright side, Scott had given her his scarf after the second time she shuddered and edged closer to his heat, and now she couldn’t smell anything but him. She buried her face more comfortably into the scarf.
By the end of the apartment complex, they were down to just a third of their original cookie count—not counting the boxes back in his kitchen.
“Let’s go out tonight,” she sighed, arching her back and stretching as she settled into the passenger seat.
Scott smiled softly at her—a smile she was coming to recognize as an indication that he totally wanted to make out with her. “What do you want to get?”
She glanced at the back seat and then grinned up at him, quietly reaching for his hand on the gearshift. “Anything but cookies.”

Kira woke up to a start when her phone buzzed. She groaned, rolling over and pulling her phone out from her covers. It was just 10am. Kira unlocked her phone to read a new text from Lydia.
come to my christmas party tonight! i’ll introduce you to some people.
Kira smiled. Excitement replaced her determination to catch more slee. Although she had only moved to Beacon Hills a week ago, she'd already made one good friend- Lydia. Kira boosted herself up and replied to the text.
I'll be there!
------
Kira carefully parked her car outside Lydia's house. The faint thump of music came from the house. Kira heard people laughing inside. She stepped out of her car, locking it as she approached the front door. She rang the doorbell, and within seconds, Lydia was at the door.
“Hey Kira! I’m so glad you came! Come in!”
Kira stepped inside and Lydia promptly grabbed her arm. "Come on, there's someone I want you to meet!"
Kira reluctantly let Lydia drag her into a spacious living room where dozens of people were chatting in their own social circles. Kira recognized some party-goers from her new school.
Lydia pulled Kira into a smaller circle. "Hey Stiles, can I talk to you for a sec?"
A stranger retracted from the circle. As Lydia yanked Kira's arm toward his, Kira made eye contact with a boy across the room who held her gaze for a second before Lydia's grip forced Kira to turn away.
Kira twisted around to try to get a glimpse at him, but he was lost in a sea of bodies.
"Kira!! Hey!" Lydia waved her hand in front of Kira. "Kira! This is Stiles. Stiles, this is Kira. She's new at Beacon Hills."
Kira finally focused her attention on the average boy. He smiled awkwardly, shuffling closer to Kira.
"Hi. Um.." he nodded at Lydia, who smiled and retreated.
Kira confusedly leaned against the kitchen counter. "Did she just-"
"Yeah. Uh, she's been trying to set me up with someone for a while. I've told her that I don't need her help! Sorry, this is kind of embarrassing."
Kira chuckled. "Well, could you actually..."
"Yes, I saw you eyeing Scott over there! I'll totally introduce you to him. Beats being thrust in girls' faces by Lydia."
Kira followed Stiles back into the crowd. Before long, she spotted Scott in the crowd. "Stiles! Hey! I found him!"
Kira looked around but realized that she had lost Stiles in the mass of people.
She turned back to Scott, who was now staring at her. He headed in her direction, weaving through the crowd.
"Hi." Scott stood directly in front of Kira. "I'm Scott.
"I'm Kira." Kira realized how unprepared she was to meet him. "I saw you-"
"Yeah! Uh, I saw you too. Do you go to Beacon Hills? I haven't seen you around." Scott nervously smiled.
"Yeah! I just moved here about a week ago. Lydia made me come... She tried setting me up with Stiles," Kira confessed. "He actually helped me find you."
Scott chuckled. "Of course he did."
"What does that mean?" Kira asked.
"Stiles is one of my best friends, and all of us have been trying to get him a girlfriend. As a result, he wants anything BUT a girlfriend... Anyway, I think you're more suited for me than him." Scott waited for a reaction.
Kira stared at Scott for a few seconds before carefully taking his wrist and leading him away from the people around them.
The two stepped outside onto the porch and Kira shut the door behind them.
Scott took Kira's free hand and smiled.
"What?" Kira looked strangely at Scott.
He looked up and Kira followed his gaze.
Hanging from the porch roof was a small branch of mistletoe.
Scott slowly leaned toward Kira and she met him halfway. Their lips brushed and Kira slowly closed her eyes.
Day nineteen: christmas magic

Alternate Universe: christmas tree ornaments

kira is a christmas tree fairy, scott is a toy soldier ornament, they fall in love at night when the humans are sleeping.
The living room was dark except for the lights on the tree, which flickered orange, red, blue, green, over and over.
Kira could still hear Lydia moving around in her bedroom, but Allison had been asleep for thirty minutes now. Lydia would collapse from exhaustion soon, and then, the night would really begin.
Lydia always decorated the Christmas tree the same way every year, down to the pattern of the ornaments. Kira hung from the third branch from the top, translucent wings held perfectly still until—
There was a quiet rustle from near the bottom of the tree—probably one of Allison’s cat ornaments, who were always the first to stretch out into more comfortable positions and nap the night away.
Kira waited, though. Once, she’d been caught out of place, and Lydia had used it as an excuse to break up with her boyfriend. She’d said she took the tree decorations very seriously, but Kira figured Lydia was just tired of Jackson’s drama.
After several minutes of silence, the angel at the top of the tree sighed, fluttered her wings, and took off, beginning to soar around the room. Her wings were quiet, but she wouldn’t have tried to move until she was certain.
Soon everyone was moving around, and Kira was reaching up to unhook herself. She landed with a small rustle on the branches below herself, and then carefully fluttered her own wings, testing them. She lifted up with ease, and flew out of the tree, looking for her soldier.
Scott was sitting on the second branch from the bottom of the tree, already starting to gently tap his drum. He waved when he saw her, and gestured for her to join him.
This was her favorite time. During the day, she couldn’t move or talk, since Lydia did a lot of her research from home. Allison, on the other hand, had a steady job, but her hours were irregular and so they all had to be still until the two women were asleep.
But at night? The tree came alive.
Lydia’s collection of Disney ornaments were all converging in the center of the tree, where Belle was helping Ariel down from her branch. The generic golden balls were all dropping to the floor where they were racing across the living room as quickly as they could manage.
Kira was the Christmas Tree Fairy. She’d been in Lydia’s family for years, ever since Lydia’s Grandmother had received little Kira as a gift. There was all this tradition involved. Kira was supposed to be hidden on the tree, and, like the Easter Bunny, was supposed to leave presents for all the children in the house.
Lydia wasn’t interested in hiding her, apparently. Maybe it was the no kids thing.
Kira nimbly landed on Scott’s branch and toed across it to sit next to him. “Hi,” she said, reaching for his hand immediately.
He linked his fingers with hers and smiled warmly at her. “Hey.”
She’d been around for nearly 60 years and yet she’d never loved anyone the way she loved Scott. It had been pure luck that they had even met two years ago, when Lydia and Allison had moved in together and combined their ornament collections.
Back then, she lived to explore the tree, meeting new people and stretching out her wings. Scott had been practicing when she’d glimpsed him. It was so rare for her to hear music that wasn’t Christmas-themed that she’d had to stop and listen to more.
“What’s the word?” she asked, teasingly. Gossip spread up the tree like fire might have, if given the chance. Anything Scott knew, she was likely to have heard already, but it was still fun to hear Scott talking about things like that.
“Well, Old Man Jenkins is complaining about how brittle his hook is. He’s worried that he’ll fall into the Christmas gift bag and get taken to see Allison’s parents. He hates anyone who’s more moody than him, you know?”
“Understandable,” she said, nodding. Everyone knew Old Man Jenkins liked to complain—it was how the antique icicle ornament had gotten his name. And it was always the same complaint every year. He was worried about getting old—Kira could relate.
Luckily, she had a little magic in her—enough that she could keep her hook strong and connected to her. She wouldn’t fall any time soon.
“How are you faring?” she asked with mock seriousness. “Worried about any cricks in your neck?”
He laughed and cracked his neck. “Not too bad tonight. It’s just tiring to stand at attention all day, you know?”
“I can imagine,” she chuckled. She dropped his hand to rub the back of his neck, and he curled closer to her.
They settled close to each other, resting in the branches of the tree side by side. She tucked her face beneath his and pressed as close as she could, rubbing the back of his neck. “I’m so happy to be here with you,” she whispered. It was so good to know she could be so honest with him, so brave. She’d loved other ornaments in the past, but always had kept cool around them. But with Scott…she just wanted to melt into him and never let go.
He ran his fingers up and down her spine, being careful around the buds of her wings. “This is the highlight of my life,” he murmurs. He kisses her on the forehead, and the brim of his hat taps the top of her head.
Kira laughs and curls her hands around his cheeks. She loves these moments, when she’s close enough that she almost feels like they could be one person, but not quite. She loves him. She loves Christmas.
“I wish you could stay here forever,” he sighs, adjusting so his hat isn’t pressing against her uncomfortably.
“Lydia would probably freak out,” she giggles, but internally, she wishes for the very same thing. Maybe next year, Lydia would put them closer together. It hadn’t happened before, but maybe—maybe.
In the mean time, at least they had this.
“I love you,” she says. She curls her fingers around the nape of his neck, playing with the hair there.
He hums contentedly and lightly traces the edge of her wings. “I love you, too.”

Kira awoke to the sound of her alam clock blaring. She rolled over and groaned, slamming the snooze button. She laid in bed for a few more seconds before forcing herself out of bed and turning off her alarm. Kira stumbled into the bathroom, splashing some water on her face. She glanced out the window, and what she saw caught her by surprise. It was snowing. Kira sprinted to the living room to see her mom sitting on the couch and watching the news.
“Mom!!” Kira waved at the snowy backyard. “What’s going on?”
“Watch.” Kira’s mom motioned toward the TV.
“For the first time in 64 years, it’s snowing in Beacon Hills!” the news anchor excitedly delved into a series of weather terms.
Kira walked toward the glass door that provided a view of her white backyard. “Wow. So does this mean we don’t have school today?”
Kira’s mother chuckled. “I don’t know. Call your friends and ask!”
Kira headed back to her room and pulled out her laptop, checking the Beacon Hills High website.
A notice popped at the top of the site. NO SCHOOL. SNOW DAY!
Kira excitedly grabbed her phone from her desk. Just as she was about to dial Scott’s number, her phone rang. It was, coincidentally, Scott.
Kira smiled, answering the call. “Hey.”
“Hey, princess. Are you free today?”
“As it happens to be- yes.” Kira flopped onto her bed.
“Great!! Come over to my place. My parents are gone. Are you okay to drive?”
Kira glanced out the window. “Yeah, the snow’s not deep at all. I’ll be there in a few!”
“Okay, just warning you… Stiles is here. And he invited Lydia and Malia…”
“Hey!” Stiles faintly shouted in the background.
Kira’s heart slightly dropped. She’d hoped that she and Scott would have a day to themselves.
“Sorry. It’d just be too suspicious if I told Stiles that I was busy today,” Scott whispered.
“Maybe you should just tell him about us,” Kira suggested for the billionth time.
“No. Nah, uh. Maybe. Well.. I’ll see you in a bit?”
“Yeah.” Kira hung up and grabbed her coat.
“I’m going to Scott’s!” Kira shouted as she headed to the garage.
“Have fun! Be careful!” Kira’s mom responded.
Kira started her car and backed out of the driveway. She shivered as she turned up the heater. Kira drove in awe. She’d been up north and seen the snow, but she had never experienced snow at home. Before long, she arrived at Scott’s house. Kira let herself in to see Scott and Stiles curled up on the couch, giggling at the TV like kids.
“What are you guys watching?” Kira set down her bag and hopped onto the couch next to Scott.
Scott turned to Kira and smiled, scooting his hand onto hers. “Just some Brooklyn Nine-Nine.”
The front door grunted and Lydia and Malia stumbled into the living room. Scott quickly pulled his hand away.
“Snow day!!” Lydia cutely yelped as she dragged Malia into the room.
“There’s some hot chocolate in the kitchen; help yourself!” Scott announced.
Stiles leapt from the couch and Malia and Lydia followed.
“Get me a cup!” Kira shouted. Malia turned back and nodded.
Kira leaned on Scott, taking his hand. “I wish we could tell our friends.” Kira sighed.
Scott smiled sadly at Kira. “You know we can’t.”
Kira shook her head and sat up. “But why not? Stiles is your best friend. I think he at least deserves to know. And Lydia and Malia wouldn’t judge.”
“I just-” Scott sighed. “Don’t you think it would be a bit awkward? I don’t know, I like keeping a secret with you. It’s kind of fun.”
Kira let go of Scott’s hand. “Okay.”
Kira couldn’t understand why Scott didn’t want to tell their friends about their relationship. She wondered if he was embarrassed of her, or if there was another reason why he wasn’t okay with revealing the two’s relationship.
Malia, Lydia, and Stiles returned with mugs of hot chocolate.
“This one’s for you.” Lydia handed Kira a cup.
“Thanks.” Kira grabbed her mug.
“Why are we watching this?” Malia groaned.
“Come on!! This show is absolute gold,” Stiles declared.
“Stiles, it’s snowing outside. That’s pretty exciting too.” Malia stared longingly outside, and the snow seemed to come down slightly quicker.
“Malia, have you never seen snow?” Lydia quietly chuckled.
Malia ignored the question. “We should all go out and make snowmen!”
Stiles rolled his eyes and shut off the TV. “I suppose we could.. Although there’s barely enough snow.”
“It’s snowing harder now,” Malia protested.
Scott stood up and pulled open the coat closet, dragging out a bag of gloves. “We’ve got the equipment,” he smiled.
The group crowded around, trying on various gloves. Stiles rushed to the backyard door and slid it open, jumping into the snow outside. Malia excitedly followed, and Lydia quickly pulled on her boots. Kira began to follow, but Scott grabbed her arm.
“How important is it to you that they know about our relationship?” Scott stared at Kira, his eyes showing great concern.
“I would love for them to know,” Kira hopefully responded.
“Okay. I care about you a lot, you know.” Scott pulled Kira closer. The two shared a short kiss.
“Gotta get outside,” Kira interjected, a smile forming on her lips.
“Yeah, definitely.”
Kira stepped out into the cold snow. She watched Malia’s attempts to build a snowman and Lydia’s desperately helpful comments. Stiles sat on the snow, etching something into the soft ground with his finger.
“What’s that?” Kira inquired.
“Nothing,” Stiles quickly replied, smiling suspiciously and attempting to cover the writing with his arms.
Scott stepped outside. “Everybody, I’ve got something to say.”
Kira looked up, surprised.
“Kira’s been pushing me for a long while to tell you guys, and it’s my fault we haven’t told you all. Um, Kira and I are together. We like each other. Lots, I think.”
Kira smiled helplessly at Scott, who seemed slightly embarrassed but very excited.
“Old news,” Malia mumbled, hoisting a head onto her snowman body.
“If you guys don’t think we already knew, you’ve got to be more observant,” Lydia commented, helping Malia with the head and turning to smile at Kira and Scott.
“Look!” Stiles pointed at the message he had written in the ground.
CONGRATULATIONS KIRA AND SCOTT was clearly carved in the snow.
“Oh,” Scott lamely said.
Equally embarrassed, Kira scooted toward Scott. “Well…”
“Well, let’s go in now. I’m tired of this snowman,” Malia stated.
“And it’s snowing harder.” Lydia sighed, brushing snow off of her jacket.
The group headed inside and settled once again in the living room.
“So, tell us how you guys got together,” Stiles jokingly blurted out.
Kira rolled her eyes and Scott squirmed.
“Looks like we’re gonna be stuck here tonight,” Lydia observed as the snow began falling harder. “It’s gonna be a long night for you two,” Lydia teased.

The school bell blared and students began pouring out of classrooms and into the hallway.
"WINTER BREAK!!!" Stiles goofily screamed, jumping out of his seat.
"I'm so ready to get out of here,” Scott mumbled, following Stiles out of class. The two wove their way out of the building and into the parking lot.
“Hey, are you going to Malia’s bonfire this weekend?” Scott asked, opening the door of Stiles’ jeep and getting in.
“Yeah, probably. I can take you!” Stiles jumped into his car and tossed his bag in the backseat.
“I’m not sure about going…” Scott stared out the window. “I’m so tired because of finals. All I want right now is to curl up in bed and take a long nap.”
“Scott, you’re so boring. We need to get out and do something for once! Enough of staying cooped in all weekend.” Stiles tapped his fingers on the steering wheel. “We are going this weekend.”
Scott continued staring out the window. He knew he wasn’t getting out of this one.
--------
“Have you ever been to a bonfire?” Stiles stared at the road.
The two were on the way to the shoreline, where Malia’s bonfire was going to take place.
“Nope.” Scott was leaning against the window of Stiles’ jeep, dozing off.
“Well, that explains it! You will love this so much, trust me. And you know Lydia’s helping Malia throw the party!” Stiles grinned. “Look!”
A sign to the side of the road read Beacon Hills Shoreline. Scott sat up in his seat. Stiles pulled the jeep off the main road and onto a small street shrouded by trees.
“Looks suspicious,” Scott commented.
“I know where I’m going,” Stiles butted.
Before long, the jeep pulled into a clearing, where several cars were parked. There was a clear view of the beach, and a small fire was burning on the sand. Stiles pulled into a parking spot as Malia ran up to the car.
“I’m so glad you guys made it!” Malia opened Stiles’ door and he stepped out, pulling his duffel bag with him. “We’re actually planning on staying the night, if you want to join. Kira brought some extra sleeping bags.” She motioned toward Kira, who was heaving sleeping bags out of the trunk of her car. Scott turned to Malia. “I didn’t know Kira was coming,” he stated.
“Yep!” Malia winked at Stiles. “I’m going to go help Lydia with the fire. Come with me, you guys can drop your stuff off over there.”
“Want me to grab your stuff?” Stiles nodded at Kira’s direction.
“Uh, yeah. Sure.” Scott smiled thankfully at his best friend and headed to Kira’s car.
“Hey,” Scott mumbled as he approached Kira.
Kira looked up. “Hey Scott! Didn’t know you would be coming.” She smiled, turning back to the sleeping bags. “Would you mind helping me carry some?”
“Yeah, definitely!” Scott said a little too enthusiastically.
The two grabbed as many sleeping bags as they could hold and headed toward the fire. They walked in silence for a few seconds before Kira spoke up. “So, the sunset’s really pretty,” she observed.
Scott nodded, straightening the sleeping bags under his arms. “Yes, it is.” He shot a quick look at Kira. “Um, so… how were finals?” Scott attempted to make conversation.
“I would like to talk about anything but school right now,” Kira joked.
“Oh. Yeah. Me too,” Scott chuckled.
Scott and Kira dropped the sleeping bags a few feet away from the fire.
“We’re gonna try and make the fire bigger,” Malia stated, heaving thick branches into the flames.
“That is not how you do it.” Lydia rolled her eyes. “Here.” She carefully and strategically placed branches into the fire. The flame slowly but visibly increased in size.
“Great!” Malia sat down, and the others followed. Stiles took a seat next to Scott, who was still by Kira’s side.
“Oh- hey, Scott, could you grab the drinks from the car?” Stiles tossed the keys to Scott. “And Kira… I’m thinking Scott could use some help.” Stiles looked sideways at Scott, trying to suppress a smile.
“Uh, yeah. Kira?” Scott stood up and held out his arm. Kira slowly stood up, taking his hand. “Thanks.”
Scott turned back to see Lydia and Malia smiling at the two. “Yeah. Let’s go.” Scott dropped Kira’s hand and awkwardly stepped away. Kira followed Scott away.
“Well, wasn’t that awkward,” Kira said apologetically.
Scott nodded and continued toward the parking lot.
“Is it true?” Kira blurted out.
“What?”
Kira looked at Scott. “I’ve heard Malia and Lydia whispering. You know what I’m talking about.”
Scott could feel his heart rate rising. “Yeah! Um, it’s true.” Scott cringed, thinking about how Stiles might’ve shared his feelings for Kira with the rest of the group.
“Okay.” Kira continued walking.
Scott took a deep breath “I’m sorry. You had to hear it like this. I think you’re great. It’s not just a crush, honestly. You mean more to me than that.”
“Wait, what?” Kira stopped walking.
“Just forget I said anything. It’s okay,” Scott mumbled.
“Scott, wait. Scott.” Kira looked inquisitively at Scott. “I… wasn’t talking about you and me, Scott. I was talking about your cheating off of Lydia all quarter.”
Scott froze in place, realizing that had disclosed his feelings for Kira- for no reason.
“Scott?” Kira stepped toward him.
Scott stepped away. “I’m sorry. This was just all bad timing. I’m sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable. Um, let’s just go get the drinks.”
“Right.” Kira led Scott to Stiles’ car.
The two unloaded a box of drinks. Scott lifted the drinks and prepared to leave, but Kira stopped him. “Scott, wait.”
Scott turned around, his face still burning from embarrassment.
“Um, just in case you’re wondering. I do like you- I mean, I like you a lot, Scott. I’d actually love to, uh, go out with you sometime.” Kira waited for a response.
Scott slowly put the drinks down. “Yeah. Uh, yeah! I’d love to.”
“Okay. Cool. Great. We should get back to the group; they’ve probably been waiting a while,” Kira joked.
Scott smiled and followed as Kira picked up the box and headed toward the bonfire.

December 12th. Christmas Party. 7 pm. 91037 Brookehill Drive. Semi-formal; bring a date!
Scott frowned at the flyer posted outside his cubicle. This was his first year working at the tech company, and he had only heard the rumors about his boss’ Christmas party. First of all, they were required for all employees- there was no getting out of them. Secondly, it was more than strongly required that those who attended bring a date. Scott had been told too many stories by his poor co-workers of being set up with the boss’ many unpredictable friends. Scott retreated to the his cubicle and plopped on his chair. He wasn’t currently seeing anyone, which was a huge problem as he was not in any mood to get set up. Scott dialed Kira’s number, but couldn’t get himself to press talk. What if she got the wrong idea? The two had a shaky past including several awkward dates and unspoken entries and departures from relationship mode. Scott hesitated for another minute before he forced himself to press talk. The phone rang a few times before Kira picked up.
"Hello?"
Scott smiled. “Hey Kira, it’s Scott. I was wondering if you’d be my date tonight for an office party? I mean- not a date. I just need someone to go with. Did I mention that this isn’t a date?” Scott cringed as he shut his mouth.
A short silence followed. “Kira?” Scott carefully said.
“Oh, um. Yeah- I should be free.. when?” Kira quickly spit out.
“Tonight. 7.” Scott nervously tapped his fingers on his desk.
“Okay. Well, where should I-”
“I’ll pick you up. If- only if that’s okay, of course.” Scott bit his lip.
“Uh, yeah!”
“I’ll see you?”
“Yeah, okay. Bye.”
The line cut off as Scott slowly put the phone down. So much for a new start.
————-
Scott pulled into Kira’s driveway 5 minutes early. He sat quietly and thought about what he was going to say to Kira. He groaned thinking about his phone call with Kira just a few hours before.
"Scott?"
Scott snapped out of his daze to see Kira peeking into his window. “Oh. Hi.” He quickly sat up and rolled down the window. “Do you want to get in?”
"Yeah…" Kira jogged to the passenger side of the car, opening the door and settling down on the seat.
Scott started the car and backed out of her driveway, turning onto the street. “I like your dress,” he commented, attempting to make conversation.
“Thanks. You look nice too,” Kira replied, fastening her seat belt. “So, um, where’s this party?”
“It’s at my boss’ house. She invited the office over for her annual Christmas party.”
Kira turned to Scott. “I’m just wondering- I’m happy to come, but really, why did you ask me to come with you?”
“Well, I needed someone to go with. Or my boss would set me up with someone else- but of course, also because I wanted to bring you and not anyone else.” Scott stuttered.
“Oh.” Kira settled back into her seat.
The car approached a mansion, which was decorated with festive lights. The hint of soft music drifted out the windows. Scott steered the car onto a long driveway, which held five cars.
“Here we go,” Scott commented as he parked the car and stepped out. He rushed to open the passenger door.
“Thanks.” Kira softly smiled.
Scott lifted Kira’s hand and laced his arm in hers. “Is this okay? I mean- I’ve got to make sure that the boss doesn’t suspect that we’re not actually together.” Scott’s cheeks burned when he realized how rude he must’ve sounded, but he didn’t want Kira to get the wrong idea.
“Yeah.” Kira looked away but kept her head held high.
The two approached the door and and Scott knocked.
A cheery woman greeted the couple at the door. “Scott! You made it! Come in!” She motioned for the pair to enter.
“Hey, Paige,” Scott nervously said. “This is Kira.”
“Well, hello Kira!” Paige pulled Kira into a warm embrace. Surprised, Kira gasped.
“You’ve got a cute one,” Paige smiled, returning Kira to Scott’s side.
Scott quickly nodded and led Kira away. “Sorry about that.” Scott squirmed. “Um, want a drink?” He grabbed two glasses of champagne and handed one to Kira.
“Thanks.” She accepted the drink and the two headed into the living room, where guests were having conversations in their little pods.
“Hey! Scott! Who have you got with you tonight?”
Scott turned around to see one of his co-workers, Stiles, grinning at him.
“This is Kira,” Scott stated, trying to sound inconspicuous.
“The Kira?!” Stiles whispered loudly as if Kira wasn’t there.
Scott shot Stiles a look, but it was too late.
“Come on Scott. What did you tell this dear Stiles about me?” Kira curiously turned to Scott.
“Oh, just, you know. Co-worker stuff.” Scott took a deep breath.
“Yeah, just stuff about how cute you are!” Stiles exclaimed.
“What?” Kira looked at Stiles as if she demanded an answer.
“Okay. We’ve got to go.” Scott led Kira away from Stiles, turning over his shoulder to shoot a dirty look. Stiles winked back.
“What was he saying? Was he joking?” Kira chuckled at Scott.
“Yeah! Totally.” Scott tried to keep his cool.
“Oh. Okay, yeah, good.” Kira nodded.
Scott nodded awkwardly back, then internally scolded himself. “Uh, here.” Scott sat on the floor and leaned against the wall, setting his drink on the floor and gesturing to Kira to sit next to him. “So, um, actually, no. I guess I said something about you. I know that’s weird, sorry.”
“No, it’s okay. We’ve got some…. history. I understand.” Kira sighed, turning to Scott.
“Okay. Good. I mean- sorry.” Scott looked into Kira’s eyes and the two shared a moment of silence.
Kira took a breath. “Would it be okay if we forgot about the past just for tonight?”
Scott’s heart jumped. “What?”
“I miss you. I want my best friend back. And maybe more.” Kira waited for Scott to respond.
Scott closed his eyes and soon felt Kira’s lips on his. “Is this okay?” she whispered.
“Yes,” Scott whispered back. “Thanks for being my date tonight, Kira.”

"Scott! Scott!"
"Hey what's up?" Scott looked up at Stiles, who was excitedly jumping around.
"So, I talked to my dad.... And he said that we could go skiing tomorrow!" Stiles grinned and grabbed Scott's arm. "I've been waiting for this day for forever."
Scott sighed. "And I've been dreading this day for forever."
"Come on, Scott," Stiles moaned at Scott. "You'll love it!"
Scott humphed. "I hate snow and you know it."
"Scotty, please. For my birthday!"
"Your birthday isn't for two months," Scott stated.
“Come on, please.”
Scott knew that Stiles had been waiting months for the ski season and to take Scott on his first trip. He knew he wasn’t getting out of this one. “Fine.”
Stiles’ face lit up. “Grab your stuff and get packed!”
-------------
“This is going to be so great,” Stiles excitedly exclaimed, as he grabbed a pair of skis. “Looks like these might fit you.”
Scott sat defeatedly on the bench as Stiles tossed him a pair of boots. “Try these on!”
Scott fastened the buckles of his boots in place and stood up. “How do you walk in these things?”
“They’re meant for skiing, not walking,” Stiles pointedly stated. “Here, grab your skis. And here are some poles.”
Stiles handed Scott a pair of poles and proceeded to pull his boots on. “You’re gonna love this. Don’t worry.”
Scott studied the skiers gliding down the hills outside. This couldn’t be too hard, right?
“And we’re all set!” Stiles grabbed his equipment and led the pair outside. “Beginner slopes first,” he grinned.
As the two began the short trek to the ski lift, Scott became more and more tense. He gripped his poles and watched children easily board the seats.
“Come on, Scotty!” Stiles hurriedly yanked Scott toward the lift and positioned the two to board.
All the way to the top of the mountain, Stiles did not shut up. Scott was almost relieved to see the tip of the slope and a sign that his ride had come to an end.
“Okay, Scott, make sure your skis are pointing forward. And just slide down. It’ll be fun!” Stiles helped Scott sort his poles.
“Come on, let’s go-” Stiles’ ski dug into the snow as he tripped over himself and his skis entangled. Meanwhile, Scott slowly departed the lift only to lose his balance and tumble into a mess of limbs and skis.
Scott quickly untangled himself and looked back to see Stiles struggling to get himself out of his mess. “Stiles!” Scott shouted. Scott tried to ski back up the short slope, but he couldn’t propel himself up. “Stiles!”
Suddenly, a girl appeared by Stiles’ side. “I’ve got you, just get your feet out.”
Stiles groaned. “My ankle,” he sighed.
“That doesn’t look good,” the girl stated.
Scott unclasped himself from his skis and jogged to Stiles and the girl.
“Stiles- are you okay?” Scott studied Stiles’ ankle.
“I’m fine, it just hurts a bit. I’m out for the day, for sure. Sorry Scotty.”
“I’ll get someone to help!” the girl stood up and readied herself to leave, but Scott grabbed her arm, startling the girl.
“Oh, sorry.” Scott released his grip on her arm. “I was just um, wondering. What’s your name?”
“I’m Kira,” she smiled.
“Thanks, Kira,” Scott replied.
Kira nodded and skied off.
“Looks like one of us benefited from this,” Stiles mumbled.
------
“The first-aid guy says he’ll be okay, but his ankle’s sprained and he definitely won’t be able to ski for a few weeks.” Kira told Scott as she gestured to a sleeping Stiles.
Scott sighed. “That’s not good… seeing as we came because he forced me to and I’ve really got no idea how to ski.”
“I could teach you!” Kira’s eyes lit up.
“Yeah, I would love to learn! But I’ve got to stay with Stiles. I might need to drive him home; his dad’s going to be worried.” Scott shrugged.
“Hey, Scott. Don’t worry about me. Go. Have fun.” Stiles winked and slowly began to push himself up, dragging his wrapped ankle carefully.
“Are you sure that you’ll be okay?” Scott walked over to his friend and eyed his ankle.
“I’ll be fine. We’ve been through worse,” Stiles smiled.
Scott turned to Kira. “So, let’s get to the lifts?”
Kira smiled and propped open the door. “See ya, Stiles.”
As the door shut closed, Kira picked up her skis and motioned for Scott to follow her to the lift. “I guess your first experience on the slopes wasn’t that great,” Kira chuckled.
“I’m just hoping I don’t break something,” Scott said.
The two approached the lift and Kira helped Scott get on.
“So, you and Stiles are pretty close!” Kira pulled the safety bar over her and Scott’s heads.
“Yeah, we’ve been friends forever,” Scott replied. “What brings you to the slopes today?”
Kira sighed. “Well, it’s been hell at home. My parents have been forcing me to take these extracurricular classes- not fun. I came to escape all that.”
“Oh, so where are you from?” Scott asked.
“My family actually just moved to Beacon Hills. I’m surprised my dad let me drive all the way here by myself,” Kira said.
“Do you go to Beacon Hills High? I haven’t seen you around!”
Kira smiled. “I’m kind of quiet, I guess. I don’t know. I’m still working on fitting in.”
The end of the lift ride approached, and Kira pulled up the bar. “Ready?”
Kira held Scott’s arm and the two made it off the lift without any incidents.
“Not too bad, huh?” Kira led Scott to the edge of the slope. “Now, time to get down.”
Kira let Scott go. “For starters, work on pointing your skis slightly in. That’ll help you go slower. It just takes practice, but it’s pretty simple. Give it a try!”
Scott cautiously pushed himself down the slope, and Kira followed.
“You’ve got it!” Kira skied beside Scott with perfect control. “Watch out for icy spots-”
Scott slipped and attempted to gain balance by stabbing his poles into the hard snow, but only Kira’s quick support saved Scott from falling. Kira secured her hand around Scott and braked hard, using her strength to keep him up.
“Oh, thanks.” Scott embarrassedly smiled at Kira. “You didn’t need to-”
“You definitely needed me,” Kira joked.
The two stayed standing with Kira still gripping Scott’s arm. “We should, um, probably get down,” Scott mumbled.
“Yeah. Right.” Kira let go of Scott and proceeded down the hill. “Come on!”
----------
“How was it?” Stiles looked up from his phone to greet Scott and Kira as they returned to the lodge.
“It was really fun!” Kira exclaimed as she set her poles and skis aside. “Scott’s not bad.”
Scott followed suit and set his equipment aside, plopping down next to Stiles. “You were right. It’s pretty fun,” he admitted.
“Yes!!” Stiles grunted. “So, he wasn’t too hard to handle?” Stiles motioned to Kira.
“Oh! Um, he was great.” Kira blushed.
“Great! Huh, Scott…” Stiles started.
“Shut up, Stiles,” Scott couldn’t hide the smile forming on his lips.
“So, he asked you out!” Stiles grinned at Kira.
“Just coffee. Nothing big,” Kira carefully said.
“You’re welcome, Scott.” Stiles pulled his friend in for a hug. “Glad you had fun.”
“Next year, you’re hitting the slopes with us,” Scott stated.
