she had been able to tell for a few minutes by kate’s drunken body language that maybe something was a little off still, that was nothing unusual for anyone who had been drinking on a night out. they had been talking like normal, voices raised slightly over loud the music of their current scene and standing close together a few feet from the main part of the bar as they talked back and forth, recalling the details of a story from a couple of years ago and laughing more as they recalled the people-watching they’d done downtown, earlier in the evening. but, america hadn’t at all expected kate, no matter how drunk she was to lean in and kiss her. and maybe, if it had been under other circumstances, she would have actually kissed her back, but she didn’t want to do that to her while she was drunk, for either of their sakes. especially if kate probably wouldn’t even remember it. she pulls away quite quickly, albeit gently, and, looking down at the other woman, america’s hand holding her drink sets the glass down on the nearest counter so that she can brush the loose hairs out of kate’s face. she can’t help her gaze flicking downwards to her lips momentarily, but even with alcohol swirling through her own system, america tells herself to focus. “are you ready to call it a night?”
