GUESS WHO PICKED THE BACKBRACE DESIGN WITH THE WHITE BACKGROUND AND DINOS ON IT!!

#TBT to when this second brace was insanely uncomfortable. #NoThankYou #ScoliosisLife
All the problems that I have had over the years finally make sence since I got my diagnosis. #scoliosis #scoliosislife #curvyspine
Im The Same
I was in class today and I got up to get a textbook. I have a separate textbook for each class because the weight makes my back that much more painful.
To get to the stacks of books, I hopped over a chair. Now keep in mind, I am wearing my brace so the motion was very slow and carefully thought out, trying to avoid falling over the chair. Since my science class presentation, people have started to treat me differently. But now, I was about to find out by how much.
A peer looked at me, concern growing in her eyes, and told me how I now make her nervous, especially when I hop over chairs like that.
I am glad that people care about me and understand that I’m a little different, but it comes to a point where you have to realize that I am able to live a somewhat normal life. I can do pretty much everything that a “normal” person would do. It may take me longer and I do have to plan out how, but I CAN do it. It makes me upset that people are treating me differently.
I thought my presentation would help my class understand more about my scoliosis. But I fear my presentation has frightened them a little. They are afraid that they will hurt me and I can tell they act differently around me. I just hope that my class can see that I am still the same girl they knew before the presentation.
The Pen
Today I was in science class, the very same class that I presented my scoliosis story with the day prior.
My friend and I were laughing when I heard a pen drop to the floor. And as I saw the pen land, my mind began to race. There was no way I was going to be able to bend down and reach the pen. But why not try. I was pretty close, but still not close enough to pick it up while in the contraption like brace. My friend didn’t know what to do. I can see where she is coming from. Deciding to help or save my dignity and let me try even harder. We were laughing at the sight of me half way off my seat.
And that’s when a classmate came to the rescue and picked up the pen for me. He didn’t ask me any questions, or mention it. He just picked it up, put it on my desk and sat back down. My teacher was watching from a distance. I could see the worry behind his face. Also wondering what he should do.
My brace impacts my life and makes small things feel like running a marathon. But it’s okay to ask for help and to let them help you. I don’t mind people helping me because if I don’t, then life would be 5 million times harder. Since the science presentation, my class is a little unsure of how to address me. I can see that they don’t view me the same and they always have questions. But every now and again, I do have to remind people I am normal. And occasionally remind them that I do have restrictions and help would be much appreciated. Finding a balance is hard but having trust in those around you definitely makes like easier.
I hate to admit it, but sometimes, I actually don’t mind my brace. Here are just a few reasons why:
It keeps me warm in the winter
Protects me from my sister when we fight
Personal traveling drum set
Perfect posture
Don’t have to worry about being bloated ever again
Never get hurt when you bump into people in the hallways at school
It’s a great conversation starter
I get out of chores
Makes me a stronger person
Learnt more about myself
Amaze people about how much medical terminology you know
You can get out of things
An excuse to leave class whenever you want
But the one thing I love most is that it makes me who I am today and allowed me to meet a group of amazing friends who support me everyday. They don’t mind listening to me rant and are always there to catch my tears and lend me a helping hand. I love my brace because it has provided me experiences I would otherwise not have, and for that, I wouldn’t trade in my brace for the world
