My favorite piece from Scope NYC: “Untitled 2″ by Kate Casanova.  

It’s a tiny sculpture made from oyster mushrooms, copper thread, foam, synthetic hair, and acrylic paint.  Casanova frequently incorporates mushrooms into her work, with a particular interest in the way that the fungal fruit inhabits a space of both life and death, decay and regeneration.  It is her use of mushrooms that really draws me to her work, in part due to the book I’m currently reading: “The Mushroom at the End of the World: On the Possibility of Life in Capitalist Ruins” by Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing.  The book present an in-depth investigation of the intricate histories and systems of the Matsutake mushroom as, among other things, a symbol of resilience, interconnection, and regrowth in the face of cataclysmic destruction.  

This sculpture captures the organic poetry of the mushroom, with it’s evocations of sensuous earth and forest landscapes.  However, it does so by incorporating distinctly human elements such as synthetic hair, which ties in associations with industrial production, artificiality, and consumerism. Casanova twists the hair to create organic and irregular shapes, tangled together with copper thread, from which grows the mushroom.  Life and death, nature and artifice, all twine together in this tiny piece of poetry.
