Scott Dunbier on Jim Aparo’s Spectre: Inside the Artist’s Edition

My friend, and former co-host of our now-defunct Tuesday Night Comics podcast, Billy Henehan, recently had the privilege of interviewing Scott Dunbier for The Beat about the new Jim Aparo's DC Classics Artist's Edition.

For anyone unfamiliar, Artist’s Editions are oversized books that reproduce original comic art at full scale and in full color. While most original comic art was created in pencil, pen, and ink (black and white), the color preserve every detail: white-out corrections, blue-line pencils, margin notes, and all the wonderful tiny imperfections. They’re about as close as most of us will ever get to holding the actual pages.

As great as the entire interview is, one moment really stood out to me—because I got a surprise shout-out, alongside the Spectre no less:

Henehan: It’s funny, when I mentioned a friend that this interview was going to happen today, he asked, “Oh, is there going to be Spectre stories in the book?” and I said, “Yeah! It’s like half Spectre stories!” And then he sent me an image of the cover of Adventure Comics #431 and said, “I had this book as a kid. I read it until it wore out.” I said, “You’ll be really happy. It’s in there.” Dunbier: Those particular stories, that’s my wheelhouse for Jim Aparo. My favorite is that stuff. There are only 10 stories in the original run in Adventure Comics. But they were so creepy. Michael Fleischer did such an amazing job on them. I remember when I was reading them, when I was like 12 years old, I couldn’t believe this was in a DC comic. 

Those Spectre stories by Aparo and Michael Fleisher are some of my all-time favorite work, and hearing Dunbier talk about it with such affection really drives home how great this Artist’s Edition will be.

‘Comics for Ukraine’ Anthology Raises Relief Money for War-Torn Country

At the VOICE OF AMERICA, Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds is featured in a video segment. With work from more than 15 comics creators (including me, my short story is highlighted at the 47 second mark) all creators volunteered their services with all proceeds donated to Ukraine refugee relief via Operation USA.

With more than $100,000 raised prior to release and another $100,000 expected to be raised before the end of this year, editor Scott Dunbier received the 2023 Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award for his work on this project.
