Ma Hunkel's Long-Overdue Comeback: How Harley & Ivy: Life & Crimes Breathes New Life into the Original Red Tornado

To my surprise, while looking through the June 3, 2026 previews, I spotted Abigail "Ma" Hunkel (the original Red Tornado) on the cover of the final issue of the six-issue miniseries Harley & Ivy: Life & Crimes.

I'm generally not a fan of most Harley Quinn solo books. I'm probably in the minority there, but I feel the same way about most Deadpool and Lobo solo series. Too often they seem to rely on, "Look how crazy and inappropriate I'm being. Isn't that hilarious?" More often than not, that kind of humor just doesn't land for me because it feels like it lacks a point.

Still, Ma Hunkel was enough to pique my curiosity, so I picked up the series from the beginning. To my surprise, I absolutely loved it. Erica Henderson tells a heartfelt and engaging story about the beginnings of Harley and Ivy's relationship, while her expressive, whimsical artwork perfectly complements the tone. I can't recommend the series highly enough.

Ma doesn't enter the story until the back half of issue #4, where it's revealed that she took Harley in as a runaway teenager and has remained someone Harley trusts when she needs a safe place to disappear. Interestingly, Ma looks considerably younger here than she did in her recent appearance in DC's I Saw Ma Hunkel Kissing Santa Claus, which is curious considering she'd be well over a century old by now.

For readers unfamiliar with her history, Ma Hunkel was created by Sheldon Mayer and was one of DC's earliest costumed heroes. An ordinary housewife, she first donned a homemade costume to rescue kidnapped neighborhood children from gangsters, debuting as the Red Tornado in All-American Comics #20 (1940). Although the public assumed the Red Tornado was a man, Ma became a beloved neighborhood crime-fighter and even made a memorable appearance at the Justice Society's first meeting. Her children, Huey and Sisty Hunkel, along with their friends Scribbly Jibbet and his younger brother Dinky, frequently found themselves caught up in her adventures. Sisty and Dinky eventually became her costumed sidekicks, the Cyclone Kids; as adults, the two of them married each other and joined the veteran superhero team Old Justice.

After testifying against organized crime, Ma entered witness protection, eventually returning years later to serve as curator of the Justice Society Museum. During her time in hiding, Professor T.O. Morrow secretly copied Ma's memories into the android he created as the second Red Tornado. Those memories of Ma's courage, compassion, and heroism helped the android overcome his villainous programming and ultimately become one of the Justice League's greatest heroes. Her legacy continued through Huey's daughter, Maxine Hunkel, who later became the hero Cyclone and joined the modern Justice Society.

What I especially love about Harley & Ivy: Life & Crimes is how Henderson embraces Ma's legacy instead of simply treating her as an obscure Golden Age cameo. She puts Ma back in her iconic Red Tornado costume, introduces two young characters who go by the names Scribbly and Sisty (potentially setting them up as a new generation of Cyclone Kids), and even hints that Ma may actually be a low-level metahuman, offering a fun in-universe explanation for both her incredible strength and remarkable longevity.

If you're a fan of the original Red Tornado or the Justice Society, this series is well worth your time. It's a charming, heartfelt read that gives one of DC's most overlooked Golden Age heroes the spotlight she has deserved for decades.

Edi Gathegi's Mister Terrific Series in Active Development

Buried at the end of an article in The Hollywood Reporter on Supergirl's development came an exciting reveal: a Mister Terrific series starring Edi Gathegi is in active development, with Allan Heinberg writing the pilot.

Heinberg is no stranger to superhero projects. On the comics side, he has written Wonder Woman and JLA for DC, and co-created and wrote Young Avengers for Marvel. On the screen side, he wrote and produced Netflix's The Sandman (2022–2025) and wrote the 2017 Wonder Woman film. He's a strong choice for this kind of project.

Jeff Lemire's JSA Run Ending at #24 — What Comes Next?

Some big news dropped over the holiday weekend. Jeff Lemire held an AMA (Ask Me Anything) at League of Comic Geeks. When asked how long his JSA run would last, he responded:

"Not announced yet, but what the hell, I'll say it here — my run on JSA will end with #24."

He went on to answer other questions, including how he balances the JSA's large ensemble cast:

"It is definitely challenging writing such a big cast. Breaking them up into smaller groups and giving them each plots and stories that eventually dovetail back together is the best method I've found."

He also mentioned that while he loved writing Hippolyta, he won't be writing her or Jesse Quick again — at least not for a while.

I'm bummed to see Lemire exit the book after two years. The first storyline was sprawling and left the JSA in a great spot, and the "Year One" detour was a highlight as well. But it does mean we'll only have a little time left with Jeff working on the present-day characters. That said, this is a historically long run for him on corporate-owned characters. His longest is Animal Man at 32 issues, and JSA now ties Old Man Logan for second at 24. Here's a quick look at Jeff's ongoing DC and Marvel work over the years:

There was no mention of whether the series will continue after Jeff departs. I hope it does, and if so, I'd love to see Diego Olortegui stay on as artist — he's brought so much life to the JSA. If he remains, reuniting him with the writer of Jay Garrick: The Flash seems like a natural fit. Jeremy Adams not only recently wrote Jay Garrick, but has been dabbling in Thanagarian mythology and JSA-adjacent characters like Spectre, Dove, Silver Scarab, and Jade. His Geoff Johns-style lengthy runs would be very welcome on this book.

I'd also love to see Tom Taylor write the JSA proper to help bring the characters he co-created — Superman (Val-Zod) and Red Tornado (Lois Lane) — back to Earth 2, or perhaps a political adventure featuring his Bhadnesian character the Aerie from his Suicide Squad run. Speaking of Bhadnesia, it would be great to see Josh Williamson have the JSA and Jakeem interact with his co-creation Abyss from Batman. There's a lot of untold stories there — what happened between the JSA's last adventure there with Kiku and the country it eventually became in the days of Aerie and Abyss. And after his recent Alan Scott work in Batman, I'd be very curious to see what Matt Fraction could do with the full JSA roster.

Whatever happens next, here's hoping we get more JSA stories!

Jade, Sand, Green Lantern, and the Awkward Math of Romance with a Golden Ager

For nearly two years, Jade and Sand have shared one of the most awkward romances in comics, a storyline that ultimately concluded as little more than a footnote to Hourman and Jesse Quick's story in JSA #19.

Despite that, I genuinely enjoyed their interactions and had hoped Jeff Lemire and Diego Olortegui would spend more time exploring why their relationship felt so uncomfortable. My interpretation has always been that the biggest obstacle is the age difference. As the timeline separating modern heroes from World War II continues to expand, Golden Age characters inevitably grow older relative to everyone else. Even though Sand was a teenage sidekick during the war, he'd now be old enough to be Jade's grandfather, or more realistically, her great-grandfather. With that perspective, a line like "I like you. I guess I have for a long time." starts to feel more unsettling than romantic, especially when Jade is generally portrayed as being in her mid-twenties.

So, while I appreciated the awkward chemistry between the two characters, I was also glad to see Jade appear in this month's Green Lantern and rekindle her relationship with Kyle Rayner.

I've always enjoyed them as a couple, dating back to Ron Marz's and Judd Winick's runs on Green Lantern. Based on the work of Jeremy Adams, Ig Guara, and Montos, it also looks like Jade may become a recurring presence in the series, which is always welcome. I'm happy anytime a JSA character gets more page time.

As for Sand, hopefully he'll find someone who, like him, is more eternally youthful.

Hosts J David Weter and The Irredeemable Shag break down a wild issue that sends Hawkman to an archaeological dig, only for things to take a cosmic turn when the constellation Andromeda comes to life and attacks. The episode also pauses to honor comic book creators whose careers and lives were cut tragically short, before closing out with listener feedback.

JSA #20: The Search for Identity

JSA #20, the second chapter of, "The Search for the Spectre," has just hit shelves, and it's becoming increasingly clear that this story is about more than simply finding the Spectre. It's a story about finding identity.

Not only is the Spirit of Vengeance, Aztar, searching for a new host, but the new Kid Eternity is searching for her own identity and the life she lived before her death. In both cases, I'm hoping the answers lead to either an original character or someone with a strong legacy connection to the role.

I've always preferred legacies that grow naturally from an existing character or mythology rather than having someone from an unrelated corner of the DC Universe suddenly inherit a mantle. And in the case of the Spectre, all signs seem to point toward the role eventually returning to Jim Corrigan.

One interesting wrinkle is that, outside of mystical or god-like beings such as Madame Xanadu, Asmodel, and Darkseid, forcibly bonding with the Spectre, we have never really seen a living person become the Spectre.

Jim Corrigan, Hal Jordan, and Crispus Allen were all dead when they became hosts for the Spirit of Vengeance. So all of the choices Spectre makes in JSA #20 are slightly puzzling.

While Green Lantern #23 and DC Power 2024 both confirm that Hal Jordan and Crispus Allen have served as the Spectre in current continuity, they also seem to remove both characters from consideration as future hosts. In Green Lantern #23, Hal tells the Spectre:

"I know the rules. You can't hurt me unless I deserve it, and you can't force me to be your avatar anymore. My will, my choice, and I'll never say yes to you. Not again."

Hal's time as the Spectre was certainly interesting. The idea of transforming the Spirit of Vengeance into a spirit of redemption made for some compelling stories. Still, the concept never fully worked for me. Hal Jordan already has a rich mythology as Green Lantern, and combining the two identities muddied both concepts. To me, it feels more like an intriguing Elseworlds premise than a natural progression of either character.

Crispus Allen, on the other hand, was built for the role. His tenure lasted only about six years, and unlike Hal Jordan, he wasn't borrowing another hero's identity. He was a unique character bringing a different perspective to the Spirit of Vengeance while honoring what came before.

However, according to his Who's Who entry in DC Power 2024:

"Crispus spent years in service of the Spirit of Vengeance, seeking to one day reunite with his family, and eventually, upon no longer requiring a human host, the Spectre set Crispus's soul free."

It's a fitting ending for Crispus, one that echoes Jim Corrigan's farewell at the conclusion of the Ostrander and Mandrake Spectre series.

My expectation is that this story ultimately circles back to Jim Corrigan. No obvious new candidate has been introduced, and Jeff Lemire seems to be steering readers in that direction. In Madame Xanadu's dialogue, she glosses over the Spectre's other hosts before noting:

"Over the decades, others played host to the Spectre, but it always seems to come back to Jim Corrigan."

Personally, though, I would love to see Crispus Allen return.

That preference extends to legacy characters in general. I tend to favor new characters created for a mantle or existing characters with strong ties to a hero's family or mythology.

For example, Lois Lane becoming Red Tornado doesn't do much for either character. It doesn't meaningfully expand the Red Tornado legacy, nor does it significantly advance Lois's role in the DC Universe.

On the other hand, a new character taking up the mantle, or someone already connected to that legacy, feels like a more natural progression. I'd be perfectly happy seeing Traya Sutton or Maxine Hunkel become a new Red Tornado.

There are exceptions, of course. Mantles such as Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Silver Scarab, Blue Beetle, and Hawk and Dove are built around themes of reincarnation, destiny, magical inheritance, and ancient connections. In those cases, successors like Hector Hall as Doctor Fate or the Scarab legacy connecting Dan Garrett and Hector Hall help strengthen the mythology rather than dilute it.

Even then, I still prefer Khalid Nassour as Doctor Fate because he expands the family legacy of Doctor rather than borrowing from Hawkman's.

Which brings me back to Kid Eternity.

If the new Kid Eternity turns out to be an original character, I'll be thrilled. That's exactly the kind of legacy-building I enjoy. It expands the DC Universe while respecting its history.

If she turns out to be someone we've met before, I'd be most comfortable if that connection came through the Shazam Family. There's already precedent thanks to the relationship between the original Kid Eternity and Freddy Freeman. That feels like an organic extension of existing continuity rather than an unrelated character being inserted into the role.

Whatever direction DC chooses, I hope both Kid Eternity and the Spectre serve as bridges between the past and the future. The best legacies don't simply recycle old ideas. They honor what came before while adding a new chapter to the story.
