On this day in 1988, Animal Man #1 by Grant Morrison, Chas Truog and Doug Hazlewood stampeded into stores, sporting a cover by Brian Bolland. The title reintroduced Buddy and Ellen Baker, and featured the debut of their two kids, Cliff and Maxine. With his run set before the debut of Vertigo, Morrison took advantage of the fact that Animal Man was part of the bigger DC Universe, bringing in characters like Dolphin, B'Wana Beast, Psycho Pirate and more.
In my opinion, Morrison and Truog's run on the title was one of the best superhero comics of all time, so I'd encourage you to hunt it down if you haven't read it already.
