The ghost of Scott Hansen chasing Chuck during the movie events because half his hatred towards Raleigh is in fact Chuck projecting his hurt over Scott.
Let me explain:
Chuck hated Herc for not saving his mother, but what about Scott? Chuck must have grown with Scott always there, next to his dad. Even when he didn't see them much, Scott was always there, a figure that he couldn't blame like he blamed Herc, that was half a stranger, half the last family Chuck and Herc had. I can see Herc asking Scott for help with Chuck. He could be the cool funny uncle, the one who sometimes apologizes for Herc, the one who embarrasses Chuck but is fond of him.
Scott was the last person Herc and Chuck could find support with. Their last solace.
And then Scott betrayed them both.
Fuck, Herc found out about whatever Scott did during a drift. I can't recall if I'm getting it right, but I think it was during a drop even. You're there, fighting for your life, when you find out a secret so twisted it makes you send your brother to jail or whatever happened to Scott. In that moment, Herc and Chuck lost the last member of their family. Not to death or some kaiju, but to his own stupidity.
Scott almost got him and Herc killed.
Chuck must have hated Scott so much after that. He was a coward, a liability, he put the program in danger and he would never, ever be someone like Scott Hansen. Chuck would be the best and the most reliable pilot. He would clean the name and the honor of the Hansens, he wouldn't be just a dead weight like his dad or uncle.
And then Knifehead happens.
And then the official reports come in and all of them are saying that Raleigh Becket got Yancy Becket killed because he was too immature to follow orders. He did what no Jaeger pilot should ever do (survive when their copilot dies) and he had lost one of the best Jaegers up to date. He was kicked from the Jaeger Program, he had lost everything. Worst even, his failure has marked the end of the Golden Age of Jaegers. Pilots started to die, Jaegers were dropping like flies and the once invincible Beckets were nowhere to be seen.
It would make sense if in Chuck's mind, Raleigh had fallen in the same category as Scott. Unlike with Scott, Chuck had the opportunity to say all he wanted to say to Raleigh.
Think about Chuck's dialogues again. All he said was halfway right. Mako was a rookie, Raleigh hadn't been a pilot in 5 years, one of them had zero experience in real battle and the other was known for disobeying and putting others at risk. Chuck was an asshole, but he's attitude came from concern, fear and trauma. Mako and Raleigh did almost kill everyone on the Shatterdome.
Chuck never apologized to Mako per se because it was never about her. Herc apologizes to Raleigh for him and Chuck lets his regret show. It's like all was fed by Chuck's past experiences and some of his prejudices, right? He didn't personally know Raleigh at all, but Chuck did know someone who seemed to be similar to Raleigh.
I'm just saying. Scott's existence and the inferred relationship he had with Chuck could explain why Chuck reacted as bad as he did to Raleigh coming back after all those years.
