Award-winning queer artist Scottee on World Obesity Day and why he's absolutely done defending his own existence as a queer fat person.
137/365
Today is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Bi Phobia (IDAHO). I had some other ideas for today, similar in many ways to 4/365 but instead I’m going to link to some brilliant LGBT projects / creators / people / books you should all know about:
Scottee - “Scottee's work is often about outsiderness; race, sexuality, class, age and gender, creating spaces where the perceived underdog is celebrated, at the forefront and no longer ignorable - allowing for uncomfortable conversations to happen.”
Assigned Male - Today of all days, the main page for this excellent comic was hacked this Facebook post explains how you can support.
Travis Alabanza - “Travis Alabanza is a performance artist, theatre maker, poet and writer that works and survives in London, via Bristol. Their multidisciplinary practice uses a combination of poetry, theatre, sounscapes, projection and body-focussed performance art to scream about their survival as a Black, trans, gender-non-conforming person in the UK.”
Straight Jacket (by Matthew Todd) - is a revolutionary clarion call for gay men, the wider LGBT community, their friends and family. Part memoir, part ground-breaking polemic, it looks beneath the shiny facade of contemporary gay culture and asks if gay people are as happy as they could be – and if not, why not?
There are of course, many many more. Seek them out, be not solitary, be not idle.
69/365 - Bravado
Spent the evening watching a friend perform Scottee’s latest production: Bravado. He volunteered to perform at the start of the performance and was excellent.
No photography allowed during the show (obviously) so this is an abstract photo in the Bar of the Camden People’s Theatre.
I had originally thought I would end up with a group or individual portrait of those / someone who attended, but that didn’t happen.

Last issue of Attitude had interviews w/Lady Phyll + Landon Cider + Peter Tatchell plus Scottee + Munro Bergdorf in conversation together + a little piece by Cheddar Gorgeous. And they had Lorraine Kelly given a drag queen makeover + she looked amazing.
2018 highlights lest I forget it wasn't a total fucking shit show (L-R):
Handed in my PhD
discovered Laura Jane Grace and Against Me
passed my viva
saw Heathers at the PCC
saw Nine Inch Nails for the first time
organised bi event at work and got more involved with the LGBT+ network
saw Scottee’s Fat Blokes which was phenomenal
listened to The Cure's Disintegration - possibly my favourite album
got to hang with my BFF
Got new issue of Attitude which has interviews w/Jinkx Monsoon + Peppermint from RuPaul’s Drag Race + Scottee (discussing his temporary queer commune in Peterborough). Plus a bit on Scotland’s 1st gay bookshop, Lavender Menace + reviews of the new books by Simon Amstell, Russell Brand + Joe Lycett.
Also got Elle magazine which had interviews w/Stephen Jones + Jack O’ Connell and the free gift is a choice of Benefit lipsticks.
New issue of Attitude had great interview with Scottee + John Grant interviewing Robbie Williams + the DJ Fat Tony talking about his life/problems with addiction. Also article on new Dr Who spinoff Class (which I still haven’t got round to seeing).
I forgot to mention I’d seen the last episode of Damned a few weeks ago. I really enjoyed the whole series (it’s about social workers + stars Jo Brand (who also co-wrote it) + Alan Davies). It was originally a one-off for Sky Arts then they’ve done a whole series for it. It’s funny but emotional + has some great scenes. Hope they do another series.
