Part 3
Day 15 - Mountain
Gilan could barely understand what the men in front of him were saying. Although close to the Common Language, their thick accent made it difficult to separate the words. Another reason might have been the bump on his head, which he had gotten after he was hit there.
Just a week earlier, he had gotten a message from Orman, the lord of Castle Macindaw, that there had been some suspicious activity around the border with Picta. He had asked Gilan if he could have a look, see if there was something they needed to worry about.
The Ranger had travelled to the castle to ask for further information. After he got what he needed, Gilan had gone to the border.
The first three days, nothing odd had caught his attention. On the fourth day, he had found a patrol of Scotti. Remembering the clothes of the allied clans, he knew that these weren’t part of them. He had followed the warriors for at least two days, hoping to find out what they were planning to do.
The only he did find out was that they weren’t as careless as he had thought. During one late night trip to their camp, Gilan hadn’t realised that he had been tracked as well. The Scotti had found out about his presence on the second day, but had acted as if they didn’t know. They had lured him to a difficult to reach location where they ambushed him.
Blaze had been left behind at a safe spot, hidden for the warriors and Gilan was glad that she wasn’t found.
The Scotti outnumbered him greatly and he soon had to surrender. His weapons were taken away from him and his hands were tied behind his back. They then brought him to their real camp, further away.
There, they had tried to interrogate him, but weren’t successful. The Ranger had kept his mouth shut, no matter how badly they beat him. The last thing he could remember was the blow to his head that made him go unconscious.
“The lad.”
Someone had noticed that Gilan had woken up from his sleep. He had been sitting nearby, keeping an eye on the prisoner.
Two Scotti came his way, one of which Gilan recognised as the man who knocked him out.
They were both armed with their huge sword, which they could only wield by using both hands.
As they cut the rope and helped him stand, Gilan made a move that could have been implied as an attempt to escape.
“Gonnae no’ dae that!” The Scotti both held him firmly down, dragging him with them as they brought him from to a place to be interrogated.
It turned out that they had moved further, most likely to their own village. He could see farms, with cattle grazing in the fields. Crops were growing not far away and people were working in the field.
Several people stopped to watch the prisoner being pulled through the village, sending curses and bad wishes his way. Not that he understood any of them, but Gilan had some sort of idea.
The Scotti stopped in front of a bigger farm, dropping the man onto the ground. Gilan grunted when his injuries touched the dirt. He listened to a conversation and saw a third person heading his way.
He clenched his teeth when a hand grabbed his hair, yanking his head backwards to look him in the face.
Apparently the man didn’t agree with what he saw. His voice turned louder as he asked something, then his tone turned to anger when the Scotti replied.
“Ye lost yer tongue?” The man shook Gilan’s head, using his free hand to forcefully open his mouth.
The Ranger tried to keep his mouth closed, but failed when the man pressed on his jaw.
“Speak, or bleed. Yer choice.”
Gilan was forced to look at some sort of wooden table. The colour must have been brown, but over time it had changed to a dark red. He didn’t have a hard time to figure how that happened.
The Scotti had thought that the vision of a blood soaked table would make Gilan talk, but he was mistaken. Even with the clear threat of losing limbs or his own life, the Ranger remained silent.
“Yer goin’ tae regret this,” the warrior said, taking Gilan to the table to show what instruments were placed there. “Aye, we’ll see how long ye’ll last.”
No one present would get to see how long the Ranger was able to keep the Kingdom’s secrets to himself.
A loud scream distracted them and soon, at least thirty Scotti were surrounding Gilan and the three men. Going by their clothes, they were of a different clan.
The Scotti that had imprisoned Gilan didn’t think about surrendering and instead started a fight with their enemies.
In the chaos that followed, Gilan felt how two men picked him up and carried him away. His mind was still too fogged to understand what exactly was going on. Only once he was outside the village and in the grass land, his mind could slowly get what was happening.
“Ye alright? They got ye badly.” One of the Scotti that took him to safety examined him carefully, cleaning the injuries on his face. “Goohd thing we got ye in time.”
A brown mass was suddenly emerging from behind the man, stopping in front of Gilan. A warm blow of air was what he felt next.
“I can’t leave you alone for even one moment, can I?”
Gilan had never been so happy to see his horse. He reached out a hand, gently petting her nose.
“Blaze, how did you end up here?” he asked, more to the horse than to anyone in particular.
“Lass came running to us, wouldn’t let us go through. Recognised that it must have been one of yer Ranger horses.”
Now that his face was cleaned and the dried blood was wept out of his eyes, Gilan could have a look at the man.
The Scotti was wearing clothes in the colours of blue and green, with a few touches of brown. It took a moment, but then he remembered.
“You’re one of the McDuig, aren’t you?” Gilan asked. The McDuig clan was one of the allied clans who also helped during the war against Morgarath.
“Aye!” the man’s face split open in a smile. “The name’s Wallace. And yours?”
“Gilan Davidson,” he said, clasping arms with Wallace.
Wallace frowned when he got to know his name.
“I take it ye’re not, by any chance, family of that knight David? The one from Caraway?”
Gilan chuckled, ignoring the pain that spread through his face.
“In fact, I am. He’s my father.”
Wallace shook his head in disbelief.
“Great man, that I tell ye.” He fell silent, his face now more serious. “But ye have to tell me: what are ye doin’ on this side of the mountain?”
“It’s a rather long story,” Gilan started. “Might be easier to tell during some dinner.”
